Also would part of practicing be leaving the eggs for much longer then a actual broody would?

Good thing I checked on my broody. I was switching out everyone's water & checked on her a couple time. The second time only because I heard her clucking extra loud. I opened the door & smelled the broody poop! She pooped in her nest, I had to change everything out & move her, the babies & 2 last eggs to a clean nest. Not sure if I killed the other eggs...
But anyway, I found the dead chick, she didn't eat it, she tucked it under her. It was smashed flat. She had egg shells in there still too, so I took those out. She was so clean last time, maybe it was too cold for her to move around & clean everything.

I think so. My broody pecked at my hand whenever I reached for eggs, none of my other chickens did before, I'd say broody potential. Chickens are funny though. Some brood back to back & others brood once a year or just once. Some will quit brooding in the middle of setting... They're all different, like us

Mine is a fairly nice broody. She growls & pecks but it doesn't hurt. I guess it depends on how much trust she has with you. You can prove this to her by helping her out when she is hatching them out, ie; providing food & water & especially when she is glued to the nest. I give mine scrambled or hardboiled egg every other day for extra protein. It's really helped her out, she looks so much healthier than her first time. My hen has been glued to the nest for 4 days now, so I check on her 3-4 times a day & spend a little time with her. When I see her panting I give her water. Every broody is different though, she may not even want that when she decides to set.

Edit: I gave her eggs throughout her whole setting. They don't need to eat much when they're broody.

Some hens don't lay eggs until 10 months. Maybe any day now?

Yeah, but we're talking about feed store white Leghorns, so it would be a miracle of God for me to have the one in the entire county that went broody.
I do have some gold sex links (I think it's gold, might be red; they're gold Comets), anyway, I'm hoping the Orpington in them kicks in with one of them. =D
Yeah, she's a banty, I think she's waiting for spring, but the rooster has been showing interest; of course she's playing hard to get (only she's playing impossible to get). lol
