Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

This is Henley....

This is her second brood this year.
She is different each brood and is quite the diva and acts different each brood, so now I have a couple of questions about this time for you all.
For starters, I just placed 8 shipped eggs under a her 4 days ago. I let them settle for about 18 hours before giving them to her. I checked a couple last night, and since they are darker silkie eggs, couldn't see the air cell quite yet, but did see spider veining in them. I have been concerned about air cell issues also since these are shipped eggs. I have hatched successfully with broodies all year with their own eggs. Shipped eggs are a mystery to me.

Secondly, I was curious what you all would do about a broody that refuses to eat dry crumbles, she will eat some wet down, but not much. About the only thing she will eat is scrambled eggs. If I set those in front of her she devours them, but turns her beak up at anything else. How much scrambled eggs is safe? She wont touch yogurt and only tastes other stuff. I have some grit and cracked corn in her dry crumbles to encourage her to eat more, but she just picks out the corn. Grrr! She's a stinker! Her poops have been normal just very loose from the wet foods she has been eating. Have I inadvertently spoiled her? She is kinda thin since she was broody for a week before her eggs got here. So I'm just trying to get her to eat anything at all right now. She also has food and water right under her nose all the time if she gets hungry, so I'm not sure how much she is eating, her crop is small in the mornings from emptying over night, but her poops are dark green with what looks like crumbles specks in it. She eats grass every morning when she goes out to potty so I think the grass may be the culprit to the dark green color. I haven't seen the bright green empty tummy poos so thats comforting I suppose. I hope one of you can lend some insight to this. Thanks!
There are many options for food that you could try.... I don't know if there is a 'limit' to how much scrambled egg they can eat, and it is better than nothing, but probably shouldn't be the only thing. When I do scrambled eggs for our chicks or hens I cook the eggs, then place it in a blender/chopper with a handful of hulled sunflower seeds or finch seeds to provide some different texture. I have also crumbled up a piece of graham cracker in it.
other broody treats I have successfully used....
.... canned or frozen corn, rinsed (to remove salts)
.... raisins
.... finely chopped apples, raw or cooked
.... tuna fish
.... baked or boiled white fish (we are fisherman and catch our own, the birds love it)
.... fine chopped chicken or hamburger
.... finely shredded lettuce
.....oatmeal with canned fruit juice or chopped canned fruits finely chopped into it (peaches and pears seem to be a big hit in our coop)
.... chopped cantaloupe or watermelon (a good treat, but lower nutritional value)
.... vanilla or flavored yogurt

chick crumbles can be mixed into many of these treats to help you sneak in the nutrition along with the treats....

Edit to add... forgot to include cat food.... I have crushed some in a plastic bag using a rolling pin. Another popular treat for the hens.

Have you ever had an issue with sour or impacted crop using any of these foods? I ask because I'm not sure if i can get her to eat grit.

I have never had a case of it... but I use sand for the coop floor, and spread scratch out on the floor in the broody area, so when a broody is off of the nest for her daily stretch she would eat a bit of scratch and in the process get a bit of sand also...

Moonshine had a 100% hatch rate (10/10) but 4 of those were taken by hawks!!!!

I really hope the rest have a good chance (those hawks better watch it before I do something to them!!!)

Hi Kabhyper1

I've not had a picky eater, but if I were you, I would gradually mix the crumbles and yoghurt into the scrambled eggs, adding a little more each day. I always do this mix anyway for my hens, because it makes the scrambled eggs go further, so that hopefully all the chucks get some but it's still a treat.
Good luck with your hatch. I'm a firm believer in natural instinct and lots of pregnant women have strange cravings for things their body needs. No reason why broodies would be any different, so the scrambled eggs and grass may be all she needs at the moment.

Regards

Barbara

My austerlope just hatched a clutch of eggs. I use scratch and peck feed and I ferment it for all my chicks. I switched her to grower formula during the 3 weeks. Now she is on starter with her chicks 6 of 7 hatched. I also ferment the starter feed. Keeps them from scratching it out of the bowl. And they go ape crazy for it. Mama is thin but she will fatten back up in the next several weeks. I interfere as little as possible I figure she knows what she is doing. She will eat when she is hungry. My girls have never been fond of crumbles or pellet food. They really like the unprossesed whole seed feeds.

Do hens go into lockdown? If you know what I mean lol

I'm wondering if lockdown in an incubator came about because of something hens do differently in those last three days or if it was a human invention?

Most mornings my broody gives a little growl and then comes out for breakfast when I open her box but we are now in "lockdown" and this morning there wasn't a peep out of her and she didn't move from the eggs. Just wondered if they start to hear/feel something going on and stay put and if that is where the whole lockdown came from.

Or this could just be one of those odd mornings she doesn't come out and totally unrelated lol

I'm not sure if this is everyone's hens or just mine, but when mine go broody they usually have their 'last meal' on Day 19, and then sit firmly until all the eggs have hatched.

On both occasions where I have hatched chicks there have been some chicks out and about on Day 20, so I am guessing the Broody knows when things are starting to happen. Perhaps this is their version of lockdown.

Funny you should say that about day 20 as I was reading a blog of a woman who broody hatches 100's each year and she made the comment that broody's hatch day 20 and incubators day 21. Today is day 19 for us so she may be feeling something is about to happen perhaps.
