Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I think my young (under a year old) barred rock hen is trying to go broody. I was gone last night & got home late tonight. I did collect eggs yesterday before I left but tonight when I got home & went out to collect eggs, she was sitting on eggs in the nest box & put up quite a fuss when I went to get them! I'll see in a few days if she is serious or not. If she is I'll sequester her as the last broody in that coop wasn't successful because everyone kept periodically adding eggs to her nest.

Our latest hatch started yesterday! As usual, on day 19! Had 2 yesterday, now 2 more that I can see today. I think at least 2 of them are Sultan crosses. Yipee!! They are white, silver, gray and black mottled color, One has black stripes down it's back. Odd coloring, but I'm pretty sure I see head bumps on them. Had 15 eggs under broody, will see how it goes. 4 Sultan eggs, 4 blue Easter Egger eggs, and 7 English Orpington eggs. The Orpington eggs were purchased/shipped eggs, so I don't expect too much. Just hoping a few produce anyway.

These 19 day hatches puzzle me a bit. I've counted, and recounted days...it's 19 for sure. My last 3 hatches were the same.

Any more broodies this summer will have just tough it! Way to hot...and now way to wet!

Already planning for next year though. I kept an Olive Egger Roo from first hatch this year....so far he's welcome to stay, will see in time though. He's an awfully big boy! If he's not the romantic type he may have to go.

Hope your having a bit cooler days than we are! We're in NW Missouri and it's been horribly hot and humid. This current hatch produced 4 chicks out of 15 eggs. The rest were all rotten! I'm no expert for sure, but I can't help but think this excessive heat may have had something to do with it. None of my shipped eggs produced. But I know that's a risk. I may try it again sometime in the future. Appears that I had an exploded egg as well. At least it's done and poor broody can get up and around now....she was looking pretty down!

Good luck with your broody. Hope you stay cool and dry.

My broodies don't care if it is hot. I have 5 broodies (tried to break and gave up) it has been about 105 everyday, but dry heat.

Thanks! We are just outside of St. Louis, so we are having the same weather. Out of my last 2 broodies, I had an egg explode ( in July) I tried to clean up the rest of the eggs, but didn't do very well. None of her eggs hatched & she finally just gave up. The other hen who was broody at the same time had 2 hatch, 1 later died. And then several days later it looked like 2 others hatched but never fluffed up or anything.

It looks like the barred rock is going to be serious so I am trying to figure out how to separate her & her nest box from the others so noone else will lay eggs after I give her the ones I want her to hatch. I think that was part of the problem last time.

Put a a/c unit in the coop. Give them a break from the heat.

Latest hatch. Pretty sure 3 are Sultan cross and 1 Easter Egger cross. Haven't gotten a good look at legs and toes yet! Does look like 2 of them have head bumps/vaults.
