Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

My black sexlink went broody two days ago I am very suprised because what ive read they arent supposed go broody im going to try and get her to stop because I already have two hens with a tottal of 13 chicks.Anyone else have one of there commercial layers go broody?

Thanks looks like a few people have it happen just weird the day before she and another one my hens saw my broody with her chicks for the first time I am not sure if its just coincidence that they went broody the next day or not

My broody hen has apparently sitting on two eggs (thought they stopped laying when they went broody?) and I am supposed to be putting a doz eggs i ordered by mail under her on mon. So, if those eggs have been under her the whole time, they would hatch before the new eggs. Would she continue to sit on the new eggs?

If she has been sitting on these eggs for longer than a couple of days then she'll probably not stay more than 2 or 3 days longer after they hatch. Do you have any idea the age of these eggs the ones she is on now?. And could another hen have laid them in the nest your broody is in?

She's been sitting on them maybe 5 days. She is the only layer we currently have. The others ate due anytime from here on out. I do have an incubator which has three eggs who are now at day 22. I could put Prettys two eggs in the incubator, as I would hate to just get rid of them! Darn chicken hormones!!

I'd do that put them in the bator since they are on day 5, but wait till you go to set the new ones under her. Good luck and let us know how it's going.

The EXCITEMENT is Building.... tomorrow is THE Date, day 21 , for our Frizzle Broody Millie To hatch one of our Silkie Eggs!! We Had Candled it late , at day 16 and it was 3/4 Black with a perfect air sac- My lucky hubby saw movement he described it like the edge of the air sac and blackness were doing the wave in super slow motion?!

anyways I hope all this excitement isnt for nothing.
We are so tempted to check on the egg but we know its soo humid underneath her and we figure just like with incubating its probably not good to remove her from the egg and instantly change the humidity.
She used to get up for food and water but within the last day or so she has stayed put, we had to bring her the water and food which she ate and drank readily. we figure this is mother hen knowing best , so we are resisting the urge to check on the egg. I guess we just wait for peeping?

this is our First time hatching an egg any which way , let alone with a broody hen- so any advice is appreciated.

how long after day 21 before you give up on an egg? I certainly dont want an egg explosion
