Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

We came home from vacation to find my blue bantam Plymouth rock, Vera, setting on 4 eggs! She was on them all night and only got off in the morning when I let the flock out. I thought "Oh, just a false broody." But when I came home today there she was back on her eggs! We have a black bantam Plymouth rock roo so hopefully all of them will be fertile. This will be her first brood so I don't know how well she will do. I think I will leave her in the coop on her eggs as she is the alpha hen and her sister Violet hates to be separated from her (she slept next to Vera on the ground all night).
I sure hope she will hold up, I was going to incubate so eggs, but a broody is so much better

If you get a chance I'd mark the eggs just in case she lets others get in her nest and lay, that way you'll be able to keep up with hatch day and it won't be spread out too far. Keep us updated.

That is so funny! And they say chickens don't have personalities!

I'm pretty sure whoever said chickens don't have personalities doesn't have chickens. They are a laugh a minute!

I was turning newel posts on my lathe when "15" got up, angry with the world today. She was tearing thru a pile of planer shavings when I 1st saw her. Not sure what she thought she might find there.

. It was 60 out today, so she let herslf out the open front door.

Miss lydia, you are right. I have snuck eggs under broody's before that they have rejected, but 15 was not having any of that!

The chickens /personalities reminds me of a phone call from a few years ago. Keep in mind I build and repair furniture for a living. My friend Ron call and asked what I'm doing. I tell him I'm sanding a chair. He replies "they say that's thereputic" I reply " #$#$$%$#T ! It's a lot of work. Whoever said that never sanded a chair EVER .

lol

So back to 15. She snuck back in, I never saw her return (I was turning wood afterall) and moved her eggs clear across the drawer again. She is a silly girl

That's a good idea, although none of the other girls are laying yet

Violet was for a few weeks before winter weather started getting nasty. They are all under a year old anyway, even Vera.
I will keep you guys updated if she does keep it up

I know my girls do. You should hear the noise around here when 3 of the born this year Sumatra hens go under the "sumatra Spruce" to lay an egg in the same exact spot. The one in the nest gets yelling, then the other 2 get yelling, then 15 boys start yelling, this gets all the rest of the girls yelling, which gets the female Pekins quacking, then the drakes start in. Total caos. I always go outside to make sure everything is ok, and it is usually just this. A seriously out of control egg song. Meanwhile the RIR's just look around as if to say What???? I'm trying to nap here

(Those out of control egg songs ALWAYS get me going. I can't help but smile. Sometimes, even laugh. I MUST have been a chicken in a former life .... )

my chickens are a constant source of entertainment for me.
