Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

My Brahma has been getting off her nest once a day at around 11am to eat, drink and relieve herself. I have to wait while she does this to put her back in the second coop when she is done because she keeps going back into the main coop to sit on freshly laid eggs

Well, I'm not exactly sure what breed it is... All I know is that it is a cross and that it is as black as night... The other chickens in the coop always go in her box, they haven't moved her out of the coop yet... Do you know if it is a bad thing that the other chickens get in there with her?? Thanks and I would also love to hear how your experience goes also!

Lauren V, we separated out the broody hen to make sure she was sitting on the same clutch of eggs. For a few days she was in the main nest nest box and sometimes would get in the wrong nest after stepping out to eat, or another hen would lay in her box while she was out. So we set her up in a separate house with fresh eggs to make sure we didn't have a staggered incubation. Day 8 tomorrow. The low is 13 oF tonight, hope the heat lamps work. Good luck!!!

Umm... This might sound really dumb, but I have NO idea what either of those are...

Could you tell me what they are????

Internal pip is when they break the membrane that surrounds them. External pip is when they actually break the shell open...... Then zipping is the crack they make around the shell so they can start working their way out....

I looked it up and looks promising I have to see if I can turn off the image stabilization when I want to....

Miss Peggy has some good genes and I am hoping to hatch some eggs from her. Shes a Lavender with some beige overtones.​

Here she is on the move....

She was panting because it was about a hundred degrees in the picture and it took her twice the effort to move around at the time.

They were just beginning to loose their Bacon heads (baby stripes) and grow their cheeks. When I found her she was laying on the ground saying a very soff whispery Buckwheat...buckwheat... I could hardly hear her. I scooped her up and put her in the brooder cage with food and water and a deep layer of rice hulls. I figured if she survived she would do fine but thats all I did for her. Just a place of her own that was soft and protected and no competition for space or food. Within a week she was bouncing off the cage on her wobbly foot. Two weeks later I turned her out. The other Guineas never picked on her or chased her..... They did trample her occasionally. But that was only when I went in to the coop to do "stuff". Now shes BUCKWHEATing with the rest of them over and over and over and over and did I say OVER again..... LOL.

For those who dont know Guinea hens or Females are the noisy ones. Guinea cocks are only noisy when they see something to make them sound the alarm. It a Chi Chi Chi noise like a squeeky hinge, measured in Decibles.... LOL. they alarm to Dogs, hawks, Strange people...... and me in my new pink bathrobe. LOL. I love the noise and the walking burglar alarm.

I started out with ten Tweenagers and 40 keets this summer and about six rounds of predators left me with six keets and a coop fortified so that a bear couldnt get in. Sigh. I adopted one so now I have four males and three females. All mature and if it wasnt winter they would be starting to lay eggs now.
