Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I know what you mean Fuffy, It's been so warm/cold here that some of mine have been trying but I haven't let them yet. I am waiting to see what it's like in March too. And Happy Birthday belated and Congrats on the egg... Thats way cool.

I've been waiting for the forum to be back up! I like it. I've been wanting to come update, and ask questions.
So I checked my eggs last night and they are all doing awesome. there are 5 under my broody still and I'm fairly certain I still saw movement in all of them. I think today is day 17, so yesterday was day 16. The eggs were almost completely dark, some were completely dark. My broody is so much of a better mama then my incubator! Anyway, so I'm wondering do broody's typically go the full 21 days? I just don't see how if they are all so full, how the baby is going to grow anymore. I mean in a few there is still a tiny bit of light shining through below the air cell, but the ones with the air cells that had separated and spread down the side a bit, now they don't look so bad, but there is less space in the egg.
Annnddd I'M EXCITED! I hope they hatch all successfully and healthy!

Yeah...well I can't be bothered to read a whole spiel about how to use the site....Maybe later.....Or not... Missing the smileys, though!

My Hermione has always done the full 21 days, give or take. Maybe it depends on the breed of egg, as it were?

Good luck and keep us posted!

still waiting on mine...but they are slanted....

meanwhile my ee broody decided to get on the wrong nest, after the disaster of coming home monday and her being out ranging, moved the eggs and dropped them when i tried to put them back cuz she decided she was broody after all....so we were down to 3 eggs, so i brought them in and gave them to the seramas until she can decide what she is doing...

Well, we thought the 10th was day 21, but my oldest daughter now says she thinks it could have been the 20th or 21st of Dec that our hen decided to stay sitting on the egg. We did candle the egg last night and the air sac is slanted but couldn't see any movement anywhere so also did the float test. It was moving in the water so I assume there is a live chick in the egg! I'm not very good at waiting for things......I'm sort of a "now baby"
