Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Couldn't wait so you take matters into your own hands, now you know why i cannot be trusted with a bator.

I had an order for Sumatra's. So I put in pure sumatra eggs, then the other 1/2 of the bator is for me. RIR, White leghorn, EE, all fertilized by either a Blue or Black Sumatra. We will keep the hens from this, and freeze the roo's.

got those pics. shes got 3 now so 2 hatched over nite. idk who is the dad, either a quail danver, or a pyncheon. should b interesting to see them once they grow up. somehow, and idk how in the heck i managed it..i put 4 more eggs under her that arent due to hatch until the 28th. so we'll see if she stays in the nest. she really doesnt want to move so maybe it will all go smoothly. heres the pics....

They are precious, and as far as staying she may not, so be prepared to take the other into the bator if you have one. usually after 3 days they leave with their chicks to go show them the ropes if being everything chicken. love the colors though.

Should make for some interesting colors so be sure to let us see when they hatch. My lil hen is still sitting, so after a bit [when it warms some] I am going to go move her to a better nest. better nest for me anyway.

last years experiment with black austrolop/sumatra yeilded 2 chickens that looked like huge Sumatra's. Unfortunately the weasle killed them. I'm most curious about what the white leghorn crosses will look like.....

yea miss lydia, i figured. im hopin the best
i was thinkin cause usually all my other hens in the past have left the nest at day 3 or so
unless they all hatch in 1 day then in my expiernce its been sooner...as soon as they can walk a little
hopin for the best lol

Thanks Michael for the info, I am way behind in the age of information, which is okay since I still haven't mastered the remote yet. [but thats usually because Dh has it in his hand most of the time] lol I can barely use my cell phone. I guess I would be considered cave man woman.

I have a chance for some EE chicks what kind of temperment do they have?

last years experiment with black austrolop/sumatra yeilded 2 chickens that looked like huge Sumatra's. Unfortunately the weasle killed them. I'm most curious about what the white leghorn crosses will look like.....

I bet they will make some pretty chicks, looking forward to seeing what you get. I got some very pretty colors last year and still trying to figure out where they came from.
