Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I have a chance for some EE chicks what kind of temperment do they have?

As "mutts" essentially, they have varied temperaments. But I LOVE mine. Beautiful colours, most of them are very friendly, and they are good layers. Best of all, the fabulous coloured eggs they lay. They seem to be alert and somewhat flighty. Good free-rangers and good at taking care of themselves. I haven't had one go broody.

Okay today is lockdown in the bator, but I presume I don't need to do anything special with Smokey, correct? Just a few days away from chicks hopefully.

I did notice she had pooped in the straw behind her, I tried to remove it, but couldn't get it all. Will that be a problem?

Thanks for all the kind thoughts! Subscription seems to be working again now

Did 2 rounds showjumping: one unplaced but good and clear in the 2nd.

Left it on a good note and now have a serious case of the munchies!

Thinking it must be wine o'clock

No problem, if she gets up to eat maybe try then but chicks hatch with poop on the eggs. and nope Smokey will have her own lockdown, so excited for you.

Thanks BG they should fit right in with some of my game and games mixes then. As far a broody my bantams fill that bill. May just have to go get me a few of those EE's then.

I sure will, now i was going to move my lil first year broody bantam to a better nest box because most of the hens seem to like this one nest the best ,but i just went to check if anyone had laid any eggs under her and nope so maybe she'll be able to keep everyone out with her growling. lol she is sitting pretty tight so I'll just keep an eye out and move her before chicks start to hatch since she is not on the floor. Why don't they ever want to brood in the floor nests? even my duck has gone to laying her eggs on the other side of the coop from the nice quiet semi dark nest boxes that are on the floor. she now has 4 in her nest but hasn't showed any sign of sitting yet. Bg how about your hen any more signs of broodiness coming on?

I have a broody brahma. She failed on her first hatch because she flew into another side of the barn and couldn't get back. Should I trim her wings and try again or will she be ok on the other side with all the other hens? I worry about letting her hatch over there because what if they lay in her box won't that mess up the hatch days and get confusing? I also have a small cage as a last resort. What do y'all do?

There you go showing off again with tha LG thingy. lol I have always left my broodys be with the rest of the flock, take a washable magic marker and mark her eggs that way if someone lays in her box you can take it out and hatch day will be good. I have 1 hen right now that is brooding in the most famous box we have but I've checked 2 times today and so far no other hen has laid an egg in it. and I have her eggs marked 1-3. You can also trim one wing if you would rather do that.
