Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Big Red my RIR broody hatched 2 so far. I went to collect eggs this afternoon and found a cold chick, but still alive in the middle of the coop. That one is in the bator. I think I found it in time. So then I'm worried she might be a bad mama, so I did what I can't do with my Sumatra broody's. Picked her up un gloved :p . She has a fresh still wet baby under her. As soon as I put her down she clucked at the lil one and tucked it  under herself. OK, I feel better, she is a good mama.:D . If this one survives in the bator she will get that one tomorrow and a chick of hers from the bator. From an egg she kicked out :/ . I looked at the calender and today is day 21, so by this time tomorrow she will probably be done.

Those Sumatras could teach her a thing or two. Congrats!

3 weeks and a bit ago I posted that my Barnevelder was broody, and that I had scrounged 14 eggs for her. This is her second clutch, having raised 4 little ones last year. Anyway, the day after putting the eggs under her I found that she had rolled 6 of them back out, and they were quite cold, so I removed them. Over the course of the next week or so 4 of the remaining eggs got broken. I noticed that she wasn't really good about covering the remaining 4 all the time, and so I didn't have high hopes for chicks, but let her do her thing "just in case". But yesterday I saw that she had 3 chicks! Not the 14 I initially hoped for

, but probably more in line with what I have room for. DH said "3 chicks? And all roosters!"

They are, of course, quite adorable.

lol aww poor Melow!!! I am so interested to see what happens. Maybe once she hatches them out her mommy mode will kick in.
If it dosen't kick in and she rejects them because i really think she will, i will just have to waste my broody eggs and give my orpington the chicks, but if thats the case my friend usually has broodies so i can give her the eggs

Yeah! Waiting for pics please :)

Thanks for the advice. I went out to check on her and one of the chicks fell while I was standing there. I caught it. I didn't know I had reflexes like that! I put her in a box in the spare coop. I fed and watered her. She drank for about 10 minutes straight. Later I checked on her and one of the remaining eggs was cracked into three places. The chick was out, the membrane is bloody, and the umbilicus? of the chick is open. I think she must have crushed it after I moved her :( I left the chick in the box with her, it was peeping, but I doubt it will make it.
