Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Pics are so cute. I love little fuzzy butts.

Have a question. My broody didn't do so well with the hatching. She was a champ sitter but when it came to hatching she ended up stepping on and squishing to many of the little guys. Is this something they get better at or is it more like once a big footed squisher always a squisher? I ended up taking some and putting them in the incubator for the last 12 hours of the hatch.

Speaking of champion sitters - my Blue Copper Marans is drivng me CRAZY!! She absolutely REFUSES to eat. As of Day 9, not even sunflower seeds, hard-boiled eggs, OR raisins anymore. Even IF she gets off the nest - and that's a BIG if, she takes a quick dust bath and straight back to her eggs. She is drinking because I have both food and water within her reach. The water goes down but not the food.

I can only hope all this "stillness" is a physical state much like hybernation because I'm convinced she is going to starve! Heaven help us if nothing hatches!!! (Last broody poop - Friday- out of her must have been pure nitrogen. It KILLED the grass!!!

My broody was similar but live mealworms she would take on the nest. She was also sitting on bum eggs after 4+weeks so I found a local guy who sells australorpe chicks and got some that were due to hatch in a day or two and slipped them under her.

One more to hatch... geez its taking its sweet time!!! I want to see it already!!!

My little ones from this morning are up and about now, laying down every once in a while. Mom seems a bit hot so I routinely go out there to make sure she drinks some water. Upon closer inspection the little ones both have feathery legs!!! I know that one is party EE but I dont know what the other half would be. The other I think is a serama mix. The one yet to hatch is from a bantam EE but I am not sure who the daddy is either.... yay I need to have a Maury Povich show dedicated to figuring out who the baby daddy is of my chicks!!!

Boy my chicken house is smelling a might rank today! 2 broodies and they sure can make it smell!

Well Melow decided she was having another break today! first wondered off into the feild then came back to sun bathe. my phone did not save the pic of her sun bathing :(, the last pic is of melow trotting back 45 mins later, it was funny because she was eating then she just paused and shot away she must of realised she had eggs to get back to!
