Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Okay I have a question: My game hen Miss Lydia hatched her chicks last week, well the day she came out of the brood coop with them she was acting [well like a game hen flighty and crazy] she must have somehow cut her feet on the rocks we have all voer the place, she had 2 cuts not deep but enough to cause her some discomfort. I took her and soaked her feet and then applied Blue Kote to them put her to bed for the night, next day she came out limping again, so that evening I cleaned her feet again and strayed Vetricyn on them, yesterday when she came out with her chicks she was not putting any weight on her leg. so i had to wait till she finally took them to bed last eve, and caught her and soaked her feet good and examined them again. the cuts look like they are healing fine, but there is a small amount of swelling now in her upper foot and some bruising on her leg. It's not broke but maybe she bruised her leg? I really don't know what she has done, but anyway. after seeing her struggle yesterday i am thinking I'll leave her and chicks closed up for a couple days so she doesn't have to try and walk so much, will this be okay? I have never kept a mama hen and chicks closed up after she has brought them outside. But feel like for Lydias sake she needs to stay off her leg. I don't want to have to take her chicks from her they have clearly bonded and I just don't want to do that to them. I think I'll cut a piece of sod for them and then the chicks will have something to do while mom recoops. Do ya'll think this will be okay?

She's not much good to them with a bum leg so they are better off taking it easy together. She will feel better soon enough to take them back out.

Thanks ya'll, I went an cut a nice size piece of sod dirt and all and took it too them boy are they having a ball.

She is clucking to the baby and the baby is cheeping back!! I'm so happy!!
The baby has pipped through the shell but, not the white coating. (membrane?) So I'm a little concerned......but we'll see how it goes.
I'm gonna stay in side the house (or out of the broody coop) and let mama do what comes natural with out me going in there every 5 minutes..........sometimes I just can't help myself.

Sounds PERFECT to me, Miss Lydia!! (Keep an eye on those feet. They can abscess REALLY easily - aka. bumblefoot.) Sounds like you are exactly on the right track. Try to keep her clean and minimize activity.

Can you tell if the swelling is from infection? If it is I would get some antibiotics onboard fast..I use Epsom salt soak for myself and swear by it, but haven't used it on a chicken....when I cut my foot and told the er Dr it happened near the chicken coop he gave me super strong antibiotics IV...maybe overkill but he seemed to know exactly what he was doing.

I know it's so hard not to want to peek. Try and leave it up to mama though.

Doesn't hurt to add betadine to that epsom salt soak either. (If the swelling starts to get hard, you DO need antibiotics.)
Thanks BG thats what I have been using, I soak her foot in epsom salt and betadine then put her into the brood coop where it's a bit cleaner. It looks like the cuts are healing and no blk scab like bumble foot, I think she may have bruised her leg since I did see some blue like bruising. I am reluctant to start antibiotics since she and chicks are sharing same waterer. Hopefully a couple days off of her leg will be enough.
