Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Can you tell if the swelling is from infection? If it is I would get some antibiotics onboard fast..I use Epsom salt soak for myself and swear by it, but haven't used it on a chicken....when I cut my foot and told the er Dr it happened near the chicken coop he gave me super strong antibiotics IV...maybe overkill but he seemed to know exactly what he was doing.
At this point I am thinking the cuts themselves aren't the problem. But will surely keep an eye on it. although the one cut was worse than the other a piece of skin was hanging but I cleaned them real good and hopefully she'll be back to being Miss Lydia in a few days. She is an awesome mama.

Antibiotics are a last resort around here. The water delivery method definitely won't work with chicks on board as well. I believe you can give them orally just to the hen but even that is likely going to be VERY hard on her (and you!) so let's hope it doesn't come to that. I would carry on EXACTLY as you are. Sounds like you are 100% on top of it. Good luck to you and your broody!

I've had a terrible time with bumblefoot this year! Feeling VERY sorry for myself and my girls.

(Had to pull my favourite splash Ameraucana out of the breeder pen. Not cool!)

I was thinking more along the lines of im injections. I don't premedicate but if the problem is from a known infection, why not treat it...wait too long and it's sepsis...all I'm saying, the chicks need their mommy.

Don't worry we'll be watching closely, and if we have to we'll inject her.

Oh BG I feel for you and your girls. I am amazed we haven't had to deal with it with the amount of rocks and stones we have here in these mountains, I think they just keep producing them because there always seems to be more. I thought my big Muscovy drake had it last year. And it ended up being a really big hardened callous he's 9 yrs old and walking all these years i guess he just made on e that got painful, I tried alot of diff things on him trying to get him some relief. ended up buying AmLactin for humans. it has Alpha Hydroxy in it pretty expensive but he is doing so good now. it really softened that callous up. What we won't do for our birds. Has your girls all recovered? And when you have time tell us what all you have done to treat, I am always looking for answers just in case. Having 13 ducks with 2 more on the way, we had to put down some small gravel to keep the mud and muck down also so I'm sure that hasn't helped.

I am a fan of Epsom salts, for me and my animals. My Stewie had a terrible time with one leg months ago. It was bleeding, and others were pecking her, and her leg was painful and swollen. I would bring her in and bathe her feet every evening. Sometimes I put. Bluecote on and sometimes I put antibiotic ointment on, and sometimes I put bag balm on. There was a lot of over thinking occurring, and different treatments resulted. However, she recovered, and I think she enjoyed her visits to the BIG coop (mine) and she seemed to appreciate my help.

Ahhh... the broody's are sitting right next to each other! Keeping the eggs warm x2 :p
Ugh... so excited! I figured out I can watch them through our window... I'ma be a stalker!

Miss Lydia, how did you apply the a-hydroxy to his foot?
It's a lotion like hand lotion. I just catch him before bed time and wash his feet good. dry and rub in the lotion. I actually bought it for myself. because of rough skin on my heels and I had tried all manner of lotions some pretty pricey then I think I read about the AmLactin and found it at CVS great stuff.
