Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

thank you. I'm still going to kill that fox however

The babies are going to be just fine. Last night I blocked them in the nest box. Well I though I did. This morning they were all on the roost with the big girls! Of the 3 remaining chicks 2 are Sumatra/RIR mix and 1 is a purebred Blue Sumatra. And she is the smallest one. But she is in charge of her siblings. She was the 1st chick out of the coop and called her siblings out and to the brush to eat. Mama RIR taught them well.
Oh I don't blame you a bit for taking care of it, glad to hear babies are doing good.

My hen (Henny Penny) has being entertaining the idea of bring the chicks out. I had the coop door closed and finally I opened today. She went down and the chicks didnt, so she went back. (She is a Blue Cochin, only one hatched and I bought 3 Buff Orpington) I am worried of the rooster making a disaster. This coop has also another hen ready to hatch anytime.
I made another coop for the rooster and my 2 months olds chicks, but they just down want to go there, they decided to sleep at the top of the original coop with a RV roof protection but nothing else. One of these days I am going to run out of luck.

I had a hen try and go broody but we had a big storm and that broke her
Long story lol
Can't wait for my danvers to go broody as I've heard they're great broodys
I like this thread a lot very informative

Well I am all hatched out, my final count is 6 of 8.
I placed 5 brown eggs and 3 blue eggs, All 3 of my blues hatched

as well as 3 of the browns. I candled the last 2 this morning and they seemed to have stopped developing early on. It finally cooled down today so they are all tucked up under her, but I will post a couple pics of them all as soon as I can. Now I just have to wait and figure out what to do with the Roos.. Mabey I won't have any... lol...

I kinda sorta think I might have a problem! LOL

I have a Silkie, Tuke, who has hatched eggs and is a wonderful Mama Hen. My neighbor has been trying to get chicks from his Golden Seabright with no luck so when Tuke went broody again I told him I would let her hatch them. The problem... when he brought me the four eggs they already had veining! He said, oh yeah, the rooster roosts on the laying box at night! Today is the 16th day and when candling the eggs are full! He will get the chicks when they are ready to go but I'm already in love with them.

How should I calculate the "hatch date"? I think I might need to expect them any day now, what do y'all think?

Thanks in advance.

I think you are going to have to play it by ear.... take a look at a few embryo candling pictures and estimate what day your eggs are at. But still you wont know till they hatch. Momma will though.

Feeling quite proud of myself today. Actually had Naima and the kids loose in the coop ALL morning. Naima isn't as crazy as last year's broody. Naima will let the other birds in the coop (Liz absolutely wouldn't!) and only gets zingy if somebody gets too close. Naima isn't as high up on the ladder in my coop so I did have to intervene yesterday with one hen that was pretty sure she shouldn't be taking any crap from the likes of Naima.

The splash chick has a BIG ego. That crazy little bugger is already putting the run on some of the hens and it is just a week old. Crazy little nutter is going to get himself killed if he isn't careful!

A full egg after having see the veins earlier means you are very close to hatch date! maybe within the next couple of days. You may be able to tell how close they are if you can hear peeping from them. But I wouldn't mess with them right now - momma will take care of the hatching - you just enjoy the babies! and post pics please
