Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Ok, having to resist the urge to go flp up Summers skirt to see what is going on under there. I have checked on her a few times and now she isn't puffing at all. She keeps giving me the 'nothing to see here, move along' look. Soooo frustrating. I swear she gives them a 'be quiet!' cluck whenever I go to look in there. Grumble.

Haha! I hate that look! They KNOW something is happening but they keep it a secret.

Hope you have your fuzzy butts soon :)

My electric heating pad holds a steady temp at 100° on low setting with a thick towel in between..I use a candy thermometer...it also has a sponge for warm moist heat....I've used it for cold chicks but not for late eggs yet...my goal is to immediately mark the eggs so if any new ones get laid in there I can remove them...I think with eleven and thirteen hatching out a pretty good bunch so more may not be best...don't know. If the hen leaves them, then I doubt if I'd try either...I think she knows best.

here are a few pics of the chicks, gave them to the silkie to hatch since she'd gone broody- - anyway one is still in the bator, not sure what is going on with it, and one pipped and died, what causes that?

oh so adorable! love the white one - I had a white silkie last time but it turned out to be a cockerel. He has a new home with a lovely family that wanted a white silky cockerel.

Oh, sorry about the loss of the one chick. Sometimes they die before they hatch or after they hatch or a week later or at point of lay or well basically whenever... there's no cheap or easy way to know why. I just chalk it up to "these things happen" and am thankful for those that live good long healthy lives.

Cute fuzzy butts!
