Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Oh if only they kept them that long! Only one made it close to 8 weeks, and that was a buff orpington.
Janet is on week 6!

Has anyone ever had a silkie that didn't go broody though? I'd be shocked!
Not here babe.....my 3 adult Silkies have gone broody 3 times this year and now one of them seems to think she's going in for a fourth! Not a chance, its getting too cold here in Britain now, she will have to wait until next spring ;)

*hugs* Heather x

Love it. and maybe with cooler temps she'll be more inclined to snuggle with warm fuzzies than brood. I love those silkies.. Do you sell them or keep them for yourself?

Fingers crossed!

I don't know what it is. Not a splash because she/he would need two blue genes, and dad is a buff. They do look splash though! Thanks :)

Crazy silkies.. :p My girls have gone broody twice each. One was on a third round but abandoned her nest because I have a new bunny and she flipped. Nope. She's not sitting. She is on Bunny Watch 2012.

Good thing though, I caught her abandoning the nest, and got her two growing eggs to another broody who is just as far along :D

My poor broody mom is so thin. She has 11 babies she is taking care of and is doing such a good job, that she is neglecting herself. The other mom abandoned her chicks last week, way too early as they are only 4 weeks. I see her eating, well calling her chicks to eat, maybe she is watching them too much, instead of eating.

I find my broodies do this for the first few days, but after that they start inhaling the food. How old are her 11 chicks?

well my broodys had babies, I gave them all away and kept 2. I do hope with all my might there girls lol. my luck is never good in this erea. I wanted to keep the 2 ees that came from this batch, I had a total of nine chicks, 5 from one 4 from another, all went on week 2. I miss them. but know I can not raise them all over the winter. they went to a wonderful vet.
