ya i was doing that with my foot every time he got stomping his feet and getting his head low i will just tap him with my foot pushing him away .. when he was little we thought he was a hen so we always held them but he doesn't do that with my mom because i guess im the boss .. my alpha roo pecks my mom when she puts her hands in the pen but when i do he just looks away so ... i never really held houdini thats the houdan roo and braith is the hen .... there is something else my australorp roo doesn't know how to mate i think lol he goes up to his hens and pecks them in the head but idk what that means .. and my mom told me what rudy is doing and she said it means he is standing up to a higher ranks or in the pecking order roo so i guess thats me lolJason,
Wow.. It must be happening because he has no fear of humans. His dad is NOT like that at all. None of his brother are either, but I never handle my males. I want them to be stand-offish of me.
Do not handle him at all. If you want to re-establish dominance, take a stick (or broom) and follow him around. Touch him with it where-ever he goes. Let him know that you are in charge of the situation.![]()
He's a ball of hormones right now I suppose. Don't parade him in front of the girls, this does not work.
Also, watch for your houdan. Make sure you do not handle that male. They are supposedly notorious shin kickers. Gigi has been chasing strangers, so we are working on that. He hasn't caused any harm, but you definitely don't want roosters to be comfortable enough around humans to do this.
well my new alpha roo is good friends with me lol but i can't go up and grab him but he sits on my lap when i feed him treats but he is a baby but he is a good alpha roo no need for him to be scared of me i trust him![]()
Exactly.
Sounds like your old rooster may not be around much longer. Rehoming him would be extremely stressful for him. Can you make a separate area for him a few of his old favorite hens? That way he could live out his last days "at home" without being beat up by a youngun'
I'm going through the same thing right now Johnn with my old drake, he is not walking so good any more and I have been thinking we may have to put him down, but he is still eating and doesn't seem in distress so while all the boys have called a truce for the winter I am just watching him for now. When spring gets here and hormones start rising I may have to say good bye or separate him from the other drakes and gander, He has always ruled the roost so to speak but not anymore and i won't put him through the stress of having to defend himself. We just have to take it each day and see how it goes. It's hard to say goodbye when we've had them for so long.I wouldn't rehome my old one, who would want a 8 year old cockerel that can hardly walk?!, I would rehome he young one, I hope rather he gets better,or they get a long, I will just have to wait and see, I would rather he died then couldn't wk for the next year or two though, it wouldn't be fair on him![]()
