Old fashioned Broody thread for ducks 2013 edition

Ya, what about that??!! 18'F overnight here, 7' tomorrow (yuck!)... Will all those eggs freeze?

If those are the temps in the coop and the hen is not yet setting then they can freeze. Before mine were setting and we were going to have a freeze (not anywhere near as cold as you) I was gathering the eggs in the evening and bringing them inside for the night. I then put them back out after the temps warmed.

Darn it, I was seriously hoping this DID NOT count as a "winter" hatch!

I was thinking mama was already sitting. what jw said is true if left unattended they will freeze.

Well Old Lady is sitting as of last night! Her nest is in the same spot as last year, and when I was out there today, she hovered over her eggs and hissed like mad. The other nests sat unattended last night, and it was cold cold cold. I hope Spring gets here!

Well congrats on old lady making her mind up, is she letting the other girls lay in her nest if so you may want to mark the originals if you can figure out which ones they are, that way you can take out the late ones so the hatch isn't too scattered apart. .

Blah, it was -18C this morning! that wasn't even counting windchill. She seems ok.. thankfully, the sun is out and this is NOT supposed to last past today.

Just an update. I should have more ducklings by the end of this week!! 35 days will be on Friday. So could be as early as Tuesday but her sister went a little over in December. I think because of the temps.
