Old fashioned Broody thread for ducks 2013 edition

Jdywntr, chickens? On the ground? That is awesome. Your ducks are beautiful!
Thanks.

Well, the chicken just keeps going in their to lay her eggs (and when I find her I remove her), don't know if she'd brood them. And yes, nests on the ground. Actually I have my chickens nests on the ground too. Jersey Giants get huge and (from what I've read) shouldn't really have high roosts etc. I also thought that if I get a broody JG a nest on the ground may prevent eggs getting crushed as my coop is earthen floors.

I hope to join you folks soon :) Right now we have 3 female mallards 2 male mallards, 1 femal pekin, 1 male rouen/pekin mix. Unfortunetly its still to early here in Wisconsin for my flock to go broody but I'm crossing my fingers this snow will go away and they will get in the mood soon.

Ok I just returned from checking out my flock today... I have 3 Nests Today! One inside the igloo doghouse, one in the playhouse, and finally just one inside the barn! Im super excited, I cant wait to see whose nests they are! Last year the Khaki made her nest right next to Old Lady's, and Old Lady was not happy about that at all. So far so good!

Good luck, be sure to update!

So how worried should i be with us turning colder? 21 tonight with a 9 windchill tomorrow, 21 and WC of 12 and so forth... ( i put it all in F lol)

Well we know mama can keep their eggs warm it's going to be after hatch where shes going to have her work cut out for her, I'd try to put min of eggs under her so she doesn't have to keep many warm. They will have a better chance.

Well it looks like Dusty has 4 eggs? we couldn't see anymore BUT she is um, a cranky cow and you couldn't near that nest if your life depended upon it lol She covers the nest if she comes out to eat/drink too.

I have plans in place for a heat lamp and moving her to the first stall, built up with extra bedding after they hatch, i was just worried if the eggs would freeze, i am totally in new territory with a winter hatch.
