Old fashioned Broody thread for ducks 2013 edition

A coon ripped 2 of our silkies out of the duck coop this morning. I just got back from coon proofing both coops. The mosquitos are out thick Mr muscovy is about to get fired for not depleting the mosquito population.

Mama ducks doing ok im a lil worried shes not eating much but then again shes not active. I havent checked the eggs shes bit me twice today.

Oh no! sorry to hear that. Coons are nasty, relentless in their hunt for ducks/chickens.

I went out for a "beak count"...I don't know for sure when she started sitting, so I don't know when to expect babies, so I've been going out to check. Mama has moved her nest a bit...I posted a pic earlier where she was right at the entrance to her house, she's shifted back so she's more in the middle of the house. She seemed really calm, she wasn't hissing at me, of course I may have woken her up. I just really don't know what to expect, I just hope she's not sitting on a clutch of duds!!

Just be patient, i don't know what's going on with our nest either, i have peeked but won't touch or move the eggs at this point, i just shone a flashflight in lol something is going on and she knew enough a bit ago to dump an infertile egg, so guess we'll just see.. it's hard not knowing.

Yes it is, I borrowed an egg from under Hope yesterday and candled the air sac is tilted and I could see the lil one moving around , so I'd say we are on schedule here. This will be my last time to candle so hoping to see ducklings by next Wed,

Mine are due about the same time as yours, I candled yesterday just to make sure everything was on schedule, this will be my last time, so it's really up to you. I just candled 1 egg.

I have ducklings

I was out in their pen just now and heard a weird chirping noise so spied on my broody magpie call 'Smudge' and to my surprise there was a small yellow head next to her! I thought they were due tomorrow (if any hatched) so am now running around grinning.... I don't know how many there are yet I think two but possibly more, She is sat on 10 eggs. I think it may have just hatched as she was moving around a lot and trying to shove it back under her!
