im just a lil freaked out since I saw it during day light hours then saw the same coon before it was dark again tonight sigh...I.feel like sleeping out in the coop tonight lol then I have a broody duck that is in a daze. Shes out in the garage I just open the garage door and she goes out when ever she wants. Basically shes an open target.

Call animal control seeing a coon in daylight should send up warning flags. Maybe they will come and set out a trap for it. Rabies isn't something they would want to deal with.

Too bad it's holiday weekend. Might go ahead and call them anyway - if nothing else be top of the list for tommorow. Then again, potentially rabid critters attacking holiday gatherings..... if you call early there are plenty of police on duty and the holliday fray may be in a slow spot. See it again 911!

Sometimes it pays to play the all-a-tither skeeert helpless female

Anyone have any luck with Pekins sitting?? Or Rouens??

I was trying to let my silkie hatch some of my duck eggs but it turns out they weren't fertile - gave them to her too early before my drake was really covering the girls. She needs a break after sitting on those so I was thinking about letting one of my ducks try - I know Pekins are not known for sitting... however, one of my girls dug a nest into the ground about 6 inches deep and covers her eggs with the shavings. The other day when I collected all 3 eggs from around the run and set them down to do something else, she immediately went to the eggs pulled them under her with her beak and then tried to scoot some of the deep litter over them. She didn't stay with them but she definitely shows interest... what do you think? Will I not really know if she's going to sit until she fills her nest? The Rouen doesn't seem interested at all even though they are supposed to be better. If this doesn't work, I will let my silkie try again and candle them early so I know that she's not sitting for nothing...

My mallard/call cross hen is sitting on 5-7 eggs today. (not sure how many, she's been sticking close to the nest for the past week or so, so I haven't been able to count accurately.) She's got a nice nest set up, lots of feathers and soft hay inside an old trash bin turned on it's side. Mr.Duck is all proud and puffed up.

I've had chickens for 7 years, but this is my first pair of ducks and my first time having a broody duck. Anything I should be on the lookout for?

Congrats to you and proud papa and mama of course. As long a she is protected from preds during her brooding all you need to do is make sure she has food and water and something to bath in because they like to bath to keep the humidity at the right level while brooding.
