Old fashioned Broody thread for ducks 2013 edition

Thought coons were nocturnal? Night critters during daylight always have thought of rabies .....Debbie downer aren't I?
Booo Hisssssss Coons!
I always thought so too Eden, about 7-8 yrs ago this part of NC had a severe out break of rabies and the majority of raccoons were just about wiped out, We saw a lot in the day time, and my dh had to kill a couple then the animal control would come pick them up for testing. I think early morning would still be a good time to see a healthy raccoon but I'd sure be wary, especially after the rabies was so bad here, and actually they are seeing it still just saw on the news this past week of a Fox with it. Raccoons are still making a slow comeback here but they are coming back, The government dropped some kind of fishy stuff laced with rabies vaccine in it to try and help the wild life, I even heard of some cattle with rabies. I'd never heard of cattle with rabies before.

What a bummer, those coons are relentless. Hope you get him. or her.

Well, at least one of the eggs Daisy was sitting on was bad, and it popped in the nest box (I'm assuming that's what that horrific smell was

). So we tossed the rest of the nest and cleaned out the nest box really well. We're waiting for it to dry, then we'll put more nesting stuff in there; hopefully she'll sit again for us this summer. This time I'll make sure to candle so I know she's not sitting on icky eggs!

Well, I have on my calendar that she started sitting on April 23, so I think they really should have hatched this past Tuesday. I picked up a couple eggs earlier in the week, they didn't smell, but they were dark on the inside and the air sac wasn't that big. Today there were also all sorts of flies in there (which I know could have just been from the popped egg), and I think she only had 2-3 eggs left out of a clutch of 12-15. It was a difficult decision to make because I didn't want to throw out potentially good eggs, but I also didn't want other bad eggs in there just festering

Now I feel bad about my big news but have to share, I went out to close up broodys door and just peaked under mom and heard peeps so I looked at 2 eggs they have pipped the shell, didn't look at the other 2 just closed up and now hoping all will go good for her and ducklings will hatch. It's not even day 35 till Wed.

Hmmm have you had hatches from this drake before? Not one a scovie cross/scovie mule and one not right?
Busted egg may have let bacteria loose on the other eggs. Want to sanitize REALLY good. Took a good 5 minutes to get that rotten egg smell out of my nose - even eggtopsy outside and walking away from it. People having a lot of bad hatch luck this month for some reason. Sowwy.
