Old fashioned Broody thread for ducks 2013 edition

I'm getting so excited!! My first hatch ever!! By my estimates, I should have babies around the 21-23!! I am exercising a great amount of restraint, I'm so amazed by the development of the embryos, I'd go out and candle them every night if I could!! But I'm guessing that would be a bad thing...

Speaking of candling, I'm going to candle again tonight...last I checked, I know I've got 4 good eggs, and 3 I was keeping an eye on. 2 were originally in the "good" pile, but I wasn't sure about them last time, so I want to make sure they haven't gone over. Last time I candled though, I was actually able to see little shadows moving around in the eggs (holding the eggs still). I may go to the store and find a pen light though, the flashlight I've been using is an LED light that has a blue tint to it, I'd rather just have a regular white light. Anyway, gotta start getting supplies for the little ones. I'm guessing I need to get chick starter...?

Just thought I'd give an update!! I'm counting the days :)

ML--- Are these girls here crazy or what?! I had been collecting all the eggs to give away to someone who wanted to incubate them for their farm. I thought I was getting all of them. Hmmm. Hadn't planned on more but I guess we'll see what we get. I just didn't have the heart to take them away this time. Yesterday she was the stereotypical broody duck, running around squawking her brains out, today she's roaming the yard with the rest of the flock. I don't get her. When I checked her eggs today they were hot, so she had to have sat overnight. I found just one egg in the pen to, so I'm wondering if she's allowing her sister to sit with her. I only have 3 adult ducks right now. (Plus a pair of juvenile runners and a pair of KC mixes, but that boy will be leaving soon)... So a few girls to add to the flock won't be a bad thing.

Not sure how long it takes for the fertile eggs after hatching so you might want to mark and maybe take out the first 3-4 before letting her begin. My girls started back laying last week and hers were 5 weeks old, Nope I am taking them we have full houses. Oh and those you take crack open if you see the bulls eye then you'll know your in business, actually open the one there it should tell you if fertile.

She's layed her 4th egg im gonna open the other ones and let her have keep a few starting tomorrow...

Our babies are getting so big, mama still lets them follow her around but she has been back sleeping with her sisters and drake now for a week, the babies have their own house and go into it on their own each evening, they are 7 weeks old this week.drake Henry
