Old fashioned Broody thread for ducks 2013 edition

SHE'S BACK!!!!
I saw her come back briefly to remove something, I couldn't tell what from the nest.
I believe she removed the rest of the "ick" from the egg that busted.
I went to give her fresh food and water and she was sitting there as pretty as you please!
3 days to go!! (my heart may not be able to take it!)

She looks content, I wish you could get the broke egg though because that is really going to draw flies. Somehow they just know so lets hope that's what it was she just knew that egg needed to go.

She removed it herself.
I found part in the yard.
The part that was still in the nest she removed about an hour later.
And I believe the remaining yolk that was on some of the pine straw is what I saw her remove about half hour ago.

I'm sooooo praying for a few to hatch Friday/Saturday!

That's good to hear don't want ants or flies when ducklings hatch. We're all right here with you..

I'd get them moved as quick as you can though to keep any bugs from getting on the babies when they hatch especially ants or flies.

My Pekin, Cheese, has gone broody and is doing a good job of it. I have my incubator going with eggs in it in case she decides to quit. Is there anything I should do for her. I feel so bad for the girl she looks so lonely and bored. I placed a container of water right next to her so if she's thirsty she can drink without getting up. Is there anything else I should be doing? It will be a few days until the first day to candle is here but should I candle? This is her first time being broody and my first broody in case you haven't guessed here's a pic of her

So put it close enough she doesn't have to go far but far enough that she is from the nest when she lets it fly. and a question how do you plan to protect her from predators? I like to candle on day 7-8 that way you get a really clear idea if there's anything going on.

So put it close enough she doesn't have to go far but far enough that she is from the nest when she lets it fly. and a question how do you plan to protect her from predators? Oh ok I'll move the water then. Its just it was hot the other day and she was sitting there panting so I figured putting water next to her would be best so she wasn't getting up so often. She's in my covered pen. I built it awhile back but rarely use it anymore (hence the tall grass) as I free range them so much. I mostly just used it to separate trouble makers and a place for ducklings. The fencing is 1/4in hardwire mesh, along with the top. We have raccoons like crazy so when I built it I figured that would be my better choice in case a huge raccoon decided to climb on top. Didn't want it falling through. The door is always open and I guess she figured since its rarely used it'd be the safest spot? I try not to question it, I'm just grateful I didn't have to move her nest. So how do go about candling? I'm assuming during the darker hours but how would I get her off the nest? I'm afraid to shoo her off and have her leave to not come back.

I gave Miss Penelope a 4th duckling that hatched in the bator. An egg she left to raise these. She is happy..after she hissed at me then gave me a "love" bite
