Old fashioned Broody Thread for Ducks

Pics
So how are things going for everyone waiting? I found a tossed egg last night, well my husband did but i was brought out of coarse to investigate... no idea what was wrong, looked ok.. but dead nonetheless...

Looks like Lilac is down to two eggs? Lilly still has well over a dozen.. no babies yet but i will continue to check throughout the day... It's day 36? sigh. we suck at this, i am so done after these eggs.. never again...

Now i need to get ducks and plenty of them, i now have another drake... 'Junior' is totally a boy, i had been wondering in the past week or so but all doubt has been eliminated in his steady growth this past week. We will try and keep him since he may very well be our only live hatch ever... but he needs ducks too... this never ends.
when a broody doesn't hatch well or at all it is disheartening, but don't give up. When they do hatch it is so worth it.

You have such an adorable little ducky family there... makes me almost want a runner! wouldn't like my big 'Scovie drakes though lol

I really only let them have at it in hopes to bring some ducks plus it was fun for the kids but it seems to have not brought forth what i expected, i am not naive i knew things could go wrong but it seems we are destined to be the what not to do when expecting

thanks! We are SO happy we bought Patrick and Penelope. We purchased them from photo's and the description that they were born from broody's.

Perhaps next time you get a broody you should get some eggs not from your flock and see how that works.

I know I was really worried about Penelope having a hatch as the 12 eggs of hers I incubated never hatched. Yet she hatched 6 of 8. I personally don't have the best luck incubating duck eggs. Chicken eggs yes, duck eggs no. So I'll leave the hatching of duck eggs up to Penelope and her offspring. Next time I may slip her or her ducks a few of our Pekin eggs as well.

I hope the rest of your eggs hatch. I thought that ducks would be so nice, and they were until I had to combine 2 flocks....WHAT a stresser they can be, I had no idea. It sounds like egg hatching is just as big a stresser. Hopefully you will get lots of ducklings for all your work.

Well Quackers I can totally know how you are feeling, Our first Duckling of the year just a few weeks older than Junior is deff a boy too, Renamed Andy, But he's a keeper also him and our youngest have bonded so well that they left their mamas last night and slept together. Alices egg I was sure was a quitter since i had to get rid of the other 4 well yesterday i candled and could see movement, the only time i have ever seen movement in an egg i candled, then this morning went out and just listened and could hear tapping, so I am so surprised and happy if we only get one thats okay. Haven't heard a word from the person with the goslings so don't have any idea how that hatch is going.

I know theres a long way to go now for this duckling to make it into this world but mama is sitting tight and papa goose is pacing. I hope you still get some ducklings from your girls. We are on day 36 today. Ducks as well as chickens don't know how to count or do a calender so we just wait and see. .

That sound so sweet with your little babies! I wish a had a baby to go with Junior.. i think we'll just leave it as junior maybe JR? for short.. my oldest is like we have to keep him.. my reply he'll need some ducks! just like every other bloody drake i have right now... I need to find some that are 5-6wks i'll pick them out.. i am better at this than i think i guess i was just being deluded hoping it was a duck

I may still try and sell one of the black drakes... since they are almost identical and Junior introduces a new drake colour, i'll have to see.. all has calmed in the flock though... so i feel bad kicking a black drake out lol (yes insert sucker title here)

That is so exciting about your egg! i hope it works out, that's to bad you have yet to hear on the goslings ? perhaps, it's just a standard delay and will sort itself out. I am hopeful, these eggs work but i am becoming pessimistic, the girls are totally dedicated but i have lost faith.

That is rough, i know it was hard when we brought in the 3 ducks last year... that was complicated it was actually easier to introduce the baby into the flock

Hatching is beyond stressful, i know it can have great rewards when it goes well.. but there is the key.. "when it goes well"

That was really decent results, well in comparison to mine lol I have no intent to try again, this just isn't for me.. the message has been received loud & clear
