Old fashioned Broody Thread for Ducks

Big Mama just hatched her second clutch. They're 12 days old.

I am surprised since their eggs are so thick and chicken eggs aren't But hey she'd probably love the special treatment your offering, I have never been able to break a Muscovy from being broody once they get going full steam I can take every egg and she'll still sit if I close them out they climb on the hardware wire attached to their door so I just let them run the course they do get over it eventually. One year my blue fawn started in April and did not give up till Sept. I was worried she'd not get her molt in and she didn't get a very good one. I don't let mine hatch every year.

I just couldn't take it. I've been in the garden all day watching her go crazy. I gave her half a dozen duck eggs. I think some are Pekin or Swedish blue eggs, and I only have Muscovy drakes. I've never seen the muscovies mate anyone but the other muscovies, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. I'm going to keep a close eye on her, make sure he eats and drinks. Good grief. Muscovies are crazy.

My Muscovy drake pay no attention to the Runner and Buff ducks he only has eyes for his Muscovy girls.

How are my babies 2 weeks old already!??!?! Daffy has turned out to be a great mother although the stress is getting to her, I think she is starting to molt...

I am so excited to have found this thread and see that it is still active.

My Sable Duck has been laying for a while but I had been taking them as she was not laying in the nest. Any she did lay there, she soon booted so I am guessing they were not fertilized eggs. We recently enlarged their area and added a larger pool for them to swim in. Last week she was up to 4 eggs in the nest. On Saturday, she set on them most of the day.

Sunday and yesterday, she didn't set as much but when I went to check on the eggs, we are up to 8 eggs and she had built a definite nest for them. This morning when I went to check on her, she was again setting on the nest.

My question is, when do I start counting the days until hatch? Okay, another question (sorry, I'm very new at this

) will she set them full time now or will she be part time until closer to hatch?

Is she still laying eggs? If she is she isn't broody yet. Then once she is sitting constantly you can candle the eggs and see how far along they are in development. With broody girls it's a guess on your start day I think...

I didn't count tonight but when I went in she got really agitated with me. I will try to get a count in the morning.
