I recently acquired what appears to be a first-gen 1202. I am trying to give it a good shakedown before testing it out with actual eggs and it's making a noise that I think I've diagnosed properly. I am hoping folks who have more experience with particular setup can chime in.

With that much thrust play, I am assuming that the fan motor is bad and is also the source of the noise. The only thing stopping me from running out to buy a new motor already is that there is 0 lateral play in the motor shaft and I kinda figured that if the thrust play was due to abnormal wear, that the lateral play would also be a bit excessive.

I'm hoping the experts can chime in on this before I buy a $60 part I don't need.

Thanks
Chris

I have a 1st generation 1200 GQF. It shouldn't have any play in the fan motor shaft. You have most likely discovered the source of the rattle, if it isn't hitting on the fan shroud.
How much time you have before it will have to be replaced I don't know.
I had to replace mine when it seized up. Fairly easy to replace.
You may be able to adjust or eliminate the thrust play with some thrust washers...if you can find the right size and thickness.
