Hey guys, today I went out to put the birds away at dark. I grabbed one of my hens since she wasn't wanting to go in for the night. When I grabbed her, I felt a large, bumpy, scabby area under her wing. I wondered if it could be dirt or poop from dust bathing in her shavings, but after carrying her out and into the light, it reveled and very large, inflamed, scabbed over gash.
There's two, one I can see clearly, one I can't because her down is stuck to it. For now, I did warm compresses to loosen most of the down from the wound, but theres one feather left that was very reluctant to give. I gave up on removing it for the night. I clipped all the feathers away from the area, and sprayed with Vetrycin for the night. The skin around the area is yellow, and its very inflamed. I can't quite say how old it is, but I feel bad for not noticing, poor girl! :( Since it was right under her wing I bet thats why I didn't immediately notice. She's flighty as well, so I never get close enough to her to see the area.
I set her up in the shop near another injured hen, so they will be able to hear each other tonight. Along with the chicks we have there as well, so she'll have some company. ;)
As far as I could tell it didn't smell, but I'll post photos tomorrow morning in the day light so you can get a better look. I'm really hoping theres nothing wrong infection wise, and it will heal. I am worried about how inflamed it is, the yellow skin, and the amount of heat the area is giving off.
Why it happened I'm not exactly sure, its definitely to big to be from bullying, and I would have a noticed a predator or dog attack. I personally think its a spur injury from our rooster. Its in the right spot, and she has been getting over mated. I'll post photos and see what you guys think. Thanks for any insight!

Sounds like rooster damage. Generally such wounds heal readily if you keep the flies away from them. It would be wise to separate her from the rooster.

Awesome! I'm glad it doesn't seem major. I'll definitly trim his spurs, I'm planning on doing that today for sure.
I'll get some photos, should I worry about the feathers stuck to the scab? Or should I assume that wont be much of an issue? Thanks guys!
