My 26 month old Rhode Island red was dead yesterday. She had shown symptoms of lethargy for the past two days. Last week, the other bird her age, a Leghorn , showed the same odd symptoms. Tired , not real interested in eating scratch with the other chickens,. I was keeping a close eye on her, but suddenly she recovered. The red bird then started acting sick. I know for certain the Leghorn is molting, and hadnt laid in several weeks. Im not sure if the red bird that died has laid lately. I have 8 other hens, showing no signs of anything wrong as well as a few pullets and chicks that seem OK.
I am out west and we have not had hot weather lately, actually pretty cold here.
It just occurred to me that if these birds are not laying, perhaps they should not be eating layena, with calcium added? could that be that is happening?
Sorry I didn't really notice any other symptoms, yet.

She had been feeding on Layena commercial feed, plus some scraps from the kitchen like rice, spagetti, salad kind of things.
I have never wormed by birds. What would be some symptoms of needing to?
Ill check the forum here for some more info on worming.

it's best to feed chick or grower feed till they start to lay.

to confirm worms..best to have a fecal float (test for worms and protozoa) at the vet..

please describe the droppings (color and consistency)
symptoms of cocci are lethargy, sleepiness, sometimes lack of appetite.
similar symptoms for worms..
