OK, I am not looking to buy RIGHT NOW, but am curious. I dont have a bator, DH will prolly not let me have one till next year. But I really REALLY want olive eggers... so how can I get me some without having to get hatching eggs? What breed are they, or what breeds do I need to get and cross to get them? I just have zip for confidence in my hatching abilities .... and like I said no bator for long time.

It depends on the bird. The problem with eastereggers is they have no standard. They can be any color, any size, and lay any color egg. You can not order them from a hatchery because their eastereggers will lay who knows what. You would have to find someone who had specially worked with there flock to breed only dark green eggs. I have a hen that does but her offspring would not necessarily. The rooster whatever color he is out of might pass that on to his offspring.

Most people use a cross of a blue or green egg layer and a dark brown egg layer. I've seen the best results from Ameraucana and Marans crosses but good Marans can get expensive. I know of a very good incubator that is usually under $15; It's covered in feathers!

OMG I would love to have a Penedesenca! Youre lucky! Yes I am hoping that I will have enough broodies (once I even get my pullets) to be able to hatch out some eggs that I get on here, everyone has such beautiful and unique birds, whether one is looking for feather color, or egg color, someone on here usually has exactly what is needed, its awesome!

I just hatched a couple out of my EE pullet that lays a VERY blue egg with my Marans roo over her...he was hatched for a "true 9" egg, so the babies, I'm assuming, will lay a VERY dark olive egg. I have one that's from a Wheaten Penedenca momma and a Blue Ameraucana poppa, and she lays olive eggs, not super dark, but a really pretty shade:

I got her from Heidi here on BYC, and she's selling eggs now.

I will remember you! I just love all these colored egg pics on here! DH doesnt get it, but I have learned a valuable lesson from this chicken thing. I need to leave his cows alone! Inow understand why he freaks out on me when I try to bring some other breed into his herd... now he wants Leghorns (I dont want ANY white eggs as my future customer base all chose me for brown eggs) and when I freak out he laughs and tells me thats how it feels when I try bringing British Whites into his Angus herd...

I am hoping we get pullets out of this roo batch for potential Broodies! Thanks girls!

I have gorgeous leghorns that lay white eggs. I got them for one customer but my others like the colorful, one brown, blue green, etc cartons I make...

I have 18 eggs I'm ready to ship. Do you want a few? Can you grab a breathing or other kind of incubator?

Please let me know and thanks.

For the rest of you, did you use a BCM or just Black Maran rooster or what to mix with blue layer to get the army green egg? Our green eggs are much lighter

Bargan,
The hens I use just laid that color. They were "Ameracaunas" form the hatchery.

I was using a Cuckoo marans rooster, but I sold him at the swap. I am now using a Penedesenca rooster. The offspring from there should lay dark green eggs.........should.
