OMG!!..coy dogs were just in my yard!!

If I had a pack of coyotes near my home I know of several people who would be happy to get rid of them. They are very dangerous and if they arent afraid of you, you should be afraid of them. I know some people on here are not for breaking the law but a trap on my land is my business if nobody knows its there.

Thanks spotted. In the first link the second dog from the left on the bottom row is the closest of all of them. This thing just didn't look domestic at all.

thanks guys!...appreciate all the info!..
poultrykeeper..OMG!!..i hope they are not wolves!..but what you say makes perfect sense!(i live near the area you described, the Ware area...)..because, as i said earlier..there has been a big problem with coyotes in our area...enough so they were posting notices in the local vets office!..so...they probably DID release wolves to try to keep down the coy problem!....

...what i dont understand is...if the wolves kill the coyotes....what does that solve?....next we will have a wolf problem!..or maybe i already do!??...because these guys are pretty big(the one i glimpsed last night)... also, my neighbors saw them up close....there is a small trail on my road..(2 houses down from me)..well my neighbors...2 sets of couples...(they live across the street from each other), were friends, and they decided to ride their bikes on the trail one day...and they came on the pack of 5 of them suddenly...

...lol..the good thing is the dogs took off quickly...the bad thing is the neighbors told me they were huge!..and thought they looked liked wolves. but i thought that we didnt have wolves here..so i just thought they were mistaken...

...i'm bringing my goats inside!...

I would think a sting from a BB gun would make me feel a lot better in the mean time! Is it a "pump" type BB? Pump that baby up and sting him-if you shake the BBs up really loudly before you sting their butts every time you may get away with shakin the BBs and runnin 'em off! (works for horses on the hot-walker anyway-hahaha)
I hope stories like this is as bad as it ever gets there!

Lots of well meant, but misinformation offered in this thread.
1. they are coyotes, not coydogs. Dogs and coyotes CAN breed, but it's done as a survival mechanism for lack of a better term. For instance Coyotes aren't in such and a such a place and the population slowely builds and expands in a direction well there might be an ambitious yote or two that range further- no mates tp breed,. they will, to further thier gene pool and establish a population, mate with dogs- that's one of the main reason you see color variations in yotes. It's RARE and under special circumstances. If you look at the coydog link someone provided several things stand out- 1. it's a taxidermy speciman and 2. the narrative underneath talks about if you have on as a pet you need to... blah, blah, blah kinda like if you bought a wolf hybrid- some knucklehead (well intentioned if your one of them I'm sure) breeds them like the wolf hybrids you can buy if you call it a mixed breed and wink. 3. There may very well be 5 yotes in a group- this would be a family group and broken up by now or breaking up to go thier own ways, but in any event- there not exponetially more "dangerous" than 1 or two. Imagine if your neighbor, his wife and 4 young kids "attacked" you and your family (just go with it- at least it's a true though wierd example of what's going on) You'd be very worried about the man- bigger, meaner, etc, pretty worried about the mom- though smaller protecting her kids, and less worried about the inexperienced, less sure of themselves kids- same with this group of yotes. 4. They haven't been THAT brazen- nothings been killed wounded or attacked, attempted yes, but chased away. The dogs haven't been attacked, nor has anyone else. There response to the threat was to turn and run. While attacks on people have been documented they are uncommon and not the norm. Caution, not fear is called for. 5. No "state agency" released any wolves. There's a version of this about yotes, wolves, etc from state to state to state. Just irrisponsible to further this claim. 6. May or may not be a wolf running around Mass. if it is it's probably an escapee from somone that owned it illegally or legally but hasn't reported it. It's survival skills, instincts, etc will probably be much less than a raised in the wild wolf and it's not one of the pack or a whole pack of wolves that's bothering your animals.
We'll now what should you do. Probably what several people mentioned- electrify your fence, dig your fence down under the ground, cover the top for extra security- lock the animals up at night. Myabe get some hound hunters in there or trappers. I like hound hunters for two reasons. One I hunt coyotes with hounds, but two and more importantly, I really think hounds do more to educate a yote as to trouble in an area than any trapper ever does. If your chased for hours at a time week after week, eventually you'll find a more inviting place to frequent. Altough you need to eliminate over 75% of a yote population before a decline is noted, your just looking to take the yotes that have taken an interest in your stock and persuade them to find an easier meal. Take precautions, and be cautious, but not fearfull. Coyotes won't get at someone's stock because a certain yote or small group of yotes are especially dangerous and brazen. they will get at your stock because they are oppertunistic and took advantage of an oppertunity we give them. Their brazenness comes from the realization that an oppertunity to get a meal exists. They don't survive as well as they do by being brazen and confrontational. Good luck, Keystonepaul

hi keystonepaul..wow!..what an imformative thread..thanks!....no..they havent approached any humans..(thankfully)..but, also..these coy's have been on our road and woods for a long time now...and they really do not hesitate to come around at all(at night), when they feel the need/hunger.....my yard is small(only about a 1/2 acre total)...and my 3 very big dogs were right on our back deck..all our house lights/yard lights were on, and yet they still came around.....so thats why i think they are getting to ballsy..... also, the reason i am SO concerned is: where my goat pen now is..is where a deer trail was(i have no other place to put the goat pen)..and i know for a fact that the coyotes have hunted in that area(found a deer leg, hoof and shin part,...
sickbyc.gif
.. in the woods around there last year).....and..i'm thinking, that they are thinking.."um....its a small deer...SUPPER!!!..".....
hmm.png
....also..my goats are put away at night, always..(this happend at 7p.m., we were still having supper and hadnt locked them up yet...), but as my neighbors saw them during the daytime(also very close to houses...they wernt in the deep woods or anything, just a trail ))..i suppose they could come around at any time?...so what do i do then?...i am going to look into the electric fencing this week!.....because i know for a fact, ...that the winters are always the worst time for them coming around here.....but..no..they have never been confrontational!...
fl.gif
...and, i dont hate them...i know they are just trying to survive..(we are taking away so much of their land ..they are running out of food!).but..again,... my fear is because they really are getting more brazen...they must be hungry..and goat/chicken tastes good!...

Your right about Yotes being persistant. Something to think about you might be able to get some hound hunters to run them without guns- sometimes the dogs catch em and kill em,but usually the yotes get away. I know if someone near me wanted some yotes put on notice but didn't want me to shoot them I would jump at it to get my hounds some exercise. I couldn't assure them the hounds wouldn't catch and kill one, but I'd bet against it for the most part and I could look to pull them off after 4 or 5 hours as well. Depending on the situation and the particular hound that works well or it doesn't. We sometimes run the yotes at night when we want to exercise our hounds or get some young dogs some work as well- they don't seem to catch the yotes when it's dark for whatever reason. Good luck, Keystonepaul

On the trail where I hike each night, I've seen coyotes often...I even had one surprise me once as it was obviously following me. I reached down to grab a rock and that sent it on its way. I've often thought it would be neat to have a cross between a coyote and our Golden Retriever. I loved the pics where that was the case... I wonder if the hybrids can also breed or if they are like mules.

hi keystonepaul..what are hound hunters?..is it a certain breed of dog...
hu.gif
..sorry i am a dunce quite often...lol...
also, Mahonri..good question..i wonder how the breeding goes?...like with savannah cats..i think its like the f4 generation(whatever that means...lol) and after, that are fertile(because of the wild genes)....good question though!....got me wondering now!...
