I was telling my husband about this last night and he wanted to know if the oats were dyed a color. He said that a lot of times companies will dye the oats/grains pink or orange so they will not be confused for human consumption (especially overseas in poor countries). If they were might be a good clue for people to know in case this happens to someone else. Hope the hens are doing better today - let us know.

I can't believe how un-knowledgable most feed store people are about the STUFF THEY ARE SELLING!!!

Sure, if you work in a car dealership, you might not know anything about feed-grade oats vs. seed-grade oats. You might not know about food grade Diatomaceous Earth vs. Pool Grade. But if you run a FEED STORE, then you should know this stuff!!!

I hope they recover. Keep us updated, please!

I would absolutely take my pets to the vet and then have the feed store pay the bill or suffer a lawsuit!

I would be livid...

My vet would not touch an animal until he knew you could pay him before you even left the exam room. He would be doing that with a holier than thou smirk on his face.

You need to change vets...

My local feed store has a habit of loading the wrong bags in my truck. I now check every single bag before I leave, with the loader standing there. They sometimes get impatient, but I don't care. I said what I wanted, they need to write it down if they can't get it right.

I really hope your chickens will be ok!

looks like GRAMs/kg of the stuff (at least for a rat orally), so unlikely to kill adult chickens by eating a small amount, BUT you should call BAYER's hot line to get information. You should call the feed store and report the accident- demand a refund or exchange of goods, and reimbursement for any losses or $ you have spent on vet bills or consults. Look at your receipt- what does it say? Does it say feed oats or seed oats? That will tell you who made the mistake- loading dock worker vs cashier. Get the right person in trouble & trained better.

The product says is it colored pink to red- so note to all seed purchasers- do not feed dyed seeds to your animals before finding out whether this is a insecticide/pesticide/fungicide vs vitamin!

The ability to pay for an office call should be discussed before going into the exam room with the reception staff. Vets are businesses just like the feed store, they expect to be paid for services rendered. Most good receptionists will speak to the vet on the client's behalf if needed- to see if a break can be given. The people that do not say they cannot pay before going into a exam room, then get the exam & have meds filled or tests done- then announce in the lobby that they have no money are a big problem in some areas- especially in this economy. Many vets have discretionary fund/charity funds- but they tend to want to use them for people who are upfront about their lack of a budget- not have this announced & charity forced after services have been done. Smirking & holier than thou expressions are rude- and have no place in financial discussions, talking about $ should be always handled with professionalism and tact. People can find themselves destitute after one bad accident or loss. Don't tolerate that kind of behavior- take your business elsewhere.
