OMG...I am Shocked!!!

Not me!

I take really good care of my birds, but have no problem with the thought of eating some one day. I will just have to haul them to GA to do so, since my neighborhood probably couldn't handle the thought of me butchering them at the house.

And if someone told me they were buying my chicks to feed to a snake? Well, I could live with that, too.

Far too many Americans are too far removed from main stream food sources. Often are also too eager to turn a blind eye to meat industry practices but then get outraged at the practices that put meat in those neatly wrapped plastic trays at the grocery store.

My thoughts...

People can do want they want with their own stock. I can do what I want with mine. Personally, I could never kill one of my healthy birds, but would sell some to a hungry person.

It is the way of life. Not every animal is going to make it and not to mention who would feed them. At least they are being put to good use rather than just throwing them out so to say. I hate the fact that we kill animals but it is what we are designed to do we are hebivores and we eat plants and animals. If we hatched every chicken and kept it alive than we would have way to many chickens running around. I do have to admit it does stink that they have to die so young.

Even my husband who laughs at my chicken ranching said we should buy out all the cornish x's that we can find and try to save them. Bobo is on an exercise program. I would LOVE to start a no kill chicken shelter.

I have hatched eggs in my classroom for the last 3 years. I got started through a 4-H program that let us use an incubator and gave us the eggs. This program didn't cost anything and I was free to do whatever I wanted with the chicks after they hatched. Every year I have done this I have found good homes for all the chicks. If I had chicks that I couldn't place, the 4-H office said that they had a list of farmers that would take them. I know that being in a rural area is probably a benefit for the future life of my chicks.

I had heard recently that some of these class hatches (where?) result in the chicks being left by the trash to die. That to me is very shocking! At least if they are used to feed the zoo animals some kind of natural process is taking place......

It starting to sound more like a locational / individual issue. Perhaps if you want this practice to change, those affected should speak up with better options that can be realistically carryout. Not someone saying "do this or do that", one saying "I'll take them". Otherwise this why God had us rule over animals.

I chose to become a vegetarian because I do not want to be responsible for animals being killed, especially considering the horribly cruel practices in most of the meat industry, not to mention the amount of natural resources it takes to farm meat animals. However, we cannot make that decision for animals. They were born to be carnivores. It's in their nature. While we may not like or understand predation, we cannot really consider it evil or wrong, especially when humans are sitting down to big ol' juicy steaks or fried chicken for dinner. While I might not like what happens to those chicks, at least they are being used for food rather than going to waste, and at least they are being euthanized first. I would not approve of their being fed live to other animals. Someone stated that we are too removed from the process of food production. I agree completely. Anyone who eats meat should have to be educated on and witness the process by which that meat is obtained. If you are the reason for it, you should understand what you are causing to happen. We should not be able to wash our hands and consciences from it, which again, is why I quit eating meat. The students should know from day one what happens to the chicks and should be taught that it is no different from them stopping by KFC and picking up a bucket of chicken legs for supper.

Well..I see that this thread has been blown way up...Understand...Everyone has their own opinions, but those of us who feel that it is not the right way to do it should not be attacked for feeling the way we do. We certainly don't go off on anyone who has another opinion. I have nothing bad to say about anyone who feels opposite of me and raises their chickens for meat...not my thing...mine are pets and treated like family.

I am sorry I even posted this.....I was just very unaware that this happend to these "classroom" projects.

Lesson learned I guess....

Understandable, but it's dialog like this that makes BYC such a get forum to express feeling, emotions, and information. Even if it's not the popular consensus.
