OMG! I finally had to do it!

I had planned to order my new ones in April, as I did in 2007. Unfortunately new chickens had to take a backseat to DH's injury and aftercare.
I'm thinking my big girls may be back to laying before it gets really cold here. They've always been good winter layers.
Now that they are over two years old, wouldn't a broody be nice? I know, I know...keep dreaming.

You could get a broody. I did, so if it can happen for me it can happen for you.

Blech. I'm sorry you have to eat store bought eggs. But you'll appreciate your eggs more when you get them again. My hens (1 1/2 years old) are slowing down, but they haven't stopped yet. But I do have younger pullets to keep me in eggs.

Good grief, take some of my broodies. I swear I get them every five minutes and I no longer even have fertile eggs. Had one that camped out for 4 weeks this summer (I let her be, since I had enough to do worrying about integrating youngin's); if I'd have had fertile eggs, I'd have had babies, but as it was it was a pain in the rear.

How do they KNOW who wants them and who doesn't? I swear they do!

I feel very lucky, indeed. Only started with chickens last October, and already two gals have gone broody. Buffy hatched my first GrandChick almost 3 months ago, and now Shirley Welsummer is sitting on eggs. And then there are the chicks in the brooders, and the eggs in the incubators.

I just figured, as a newbie, I'd NEVER experience a broody hen. Kinda thought one had to be a long-time chicken keeper to enjoy that benefit.

So sorry you had to actually buy eggs from a store. Ick.

Yeah it sucks. I tried every possible trick in the book to get a broody out of one of my supposedly broody-prone hens and nada.

Now I have a silkie. Watch and see. I'm going to have the only silkie never to go broody. IF by some rare chance I do get a broody silkie I am going to accidently put duck eggs under her. My DH won't let me have ducks, even though we have two ponds so.....

oh you must get ducks... :) they're a HOOT! lol. Got some this summer and can't imagine ever being without them :) Gorgeous eggs
"Ever notice how chickens always look peeved and ducks always look happy? LOL"

Do what I did. But better. Tried to sneak them home but get busted as soon as I pulled in the driveway. From the front window they were saying, "Looks like a cat carrier... uhhh I think Mom has ducks."

Luckily, they pretty much left me alone. They don't fuss over the pets much. But don't fuss at me over them either.
