Maxx,
That is one thing I worry about. She doesn't want to move at all. Should I dig out the chick feeder and waterer and put food and water near her?

How many coops do you have? We have 2. What I am getting at is that when our Dixie went broody we blocked off one of the coops so she could be in peace. All the other chickens just roosted in the other coop. We put food and water in Dixie's coop and she was fine.

I have made it a point to pull my broodies off the nest each morning and put them next to the feeder and waterer. They will usually eat and drink enthusiastically, take a big dump and hop back on the nest.

You will also want to mark the set date on your calendar . . . and you might wish to do a bedtime candling of the eggs at Day 7 and then Day 14 or so. If they are not developing, you may wish to remove them so they do not crack, etc.

Good luck!

Also msrk the eggs that she is laying on so if she is off the nest and some one lays in it you can take out those eggs. It happened with Dixie.

Damummis, I think I've got a broody, too!

My problem is that I don't think my eggs are fertile so I've got to put my rooster in with the girls for a while. DD and I are already talking about what eggs to put under her!

I can sense your excitement! I think I've got it too!

I only have one coop. My broody is very protective of her space. I went out to see if she would eat and got a "whooping".

YES! My broody wouldn't move off her nest to eat. I put food and water next to her and she was fine. We put a cage around her so the other chickens wouldn't eat all of her food. Best of luck to ya!

I've done the same thing; works fine. On the other hand, I had a free-range hen in SC who I didn't even know was broody until it was hatch time. She had her nest under a huge clump of lemon grass. She managed on her own apparently. When the chicks hatched, I just fenced around the lemon grass until they were old enough to be out and about.
