Yes that is why I replied the way I did. It sounded like it was hot and in distress. I have seen this happen and they can 'fry' quickly. I do know all about leaving the bator shut, thank you very much people, But I am so glad that your little one is healthy and well today.

NOOOOOOO!!!!! dont do it. it will be fine for up to 48 hours or so after hatch. Tape the bator shut , run out of the room, lock it, throw the key away and dont go back in until moday noon time.

well thats what i did with the silkies cause as soon as 1 hatched it ran all over the bator knocking over all the eggs!!!! so i put it in the brooder and it was fine

but who knows, maybe i just got lucky o_o

I am glad your silkie is doing well. I could tell by the way you explained it that it appeared to be too hot, which sometimes happens. When that happens I do quickly open the bator and grab the chick and shut the bator back up. Otherwise, i would not open it up.

I don't have a real good picture yet. I am still worried about her/him. It's so tiny. We had to leave tonight for a few hours (I was home all day with it) and I couldn't get any sort of brooder temp that it liked. I put it's little brooder box on my desk under my desk lamp while I worked (work from home) with a basal body temp thermometer (that's all I had) I read so many conflicting temps on the web that I decided to go with my instinct. It seemed to really like my body temp (98.7) so I tried to get the temp in that ball bark and struggled with the temp all day. By the way the heating pad was not a good idea; hence the baby sleeping in the crook of my neck last night. But we had to go to a 10 year olds bday party this evening; I was afraid to leave silkie hatchling in the house under the lamp without supervision and when the house temps cool cause the fire in the stove burns out well you can see my concern; So........., I took the baby down to the coop, put all the Silkies in, turned out the light, shut the coop door and waited 1-2 min until peeping had subsided. I opened the coop door, two of the 4 day olds were eating, and my baby was kind of looking lost. I put her under momma 2 times and the third time she stayed. Momma doesn't seem to mind. As soon as we got home from the bday I went to the coop to check on things and all babies were under Momma. Now the hard part is in the morning. I don't think I can leave my baby down in the coop and run for the day because Momma Silkie has babies outside; and my baby the new hatchling is not ready for that. I plan to go get baby and bring her in the house with me for the day and put her back with Momma and the 4 day olds in the coop at night after they settle and Momma is nesting over the babies, I'll put the hatchling under her again. I am sort of lost as what to do with the lone hatchling; I would rather her be with her flock mates than her by herself with me..........she is so sweet. I think, she thinks I am her momma. If I left to go to the other room to get something she began to peep that worried peep. As soon a I returned she calmed down. She ate a little food today and went right for the water I gave her I was really surprised at the amount she drank. I didn't even have to dip her beek in it. It's as if she already knew....

If I were you, I'd leave her with mom today but stay there to supervise (out of her sight). See if she keeps up. It IS better for her to be with the others if possible.

I CAN SEE RIGHT away she can"t keep up; 4day olds are actually 6 and 7 day olds. they seem to have accepted her though. we had a hard frost here last night and the other babies seem not to be bothered by the cold; baby hatchling was visibly shivering. i am typing one handed at this time.

Okay I have two hands again. Maybe in should bring the whole crew in and brood them in the house. The issue to that would be the babies in the coop are already getting used to the cool weather baby is not. I said I wasn't going to get involved with mother nature. I lied.

This is what I would do:

Bring mama and all babies in to a big dog cage or box and keep them all inside. I think that would work well for them. Maybe a little more cleaning for you though. Then when you can put them outside later, they will know their mama. And it will be a lot easier for you when mama takes care of them. Just keep them all(incl mama) enclosed in a relatively warm place. Mama will do the rest.
