Well, it's official...I really love chickens.
I had posted a thread before on our chicken saga- beginning with three Asiatics being dropped over our fence into our garden area. We though they were two pullets and a roo(Blue the Roo, to be precise). Well, the two blacks ARE pullets, and growing like crazy, and much to my surprise, Blue the Roo has gone BROODY! Here is a pic of Blue the Roo being all the mama...
I had also made an order at Valley Feed for 6 Ameraucana's...5 pullets and a cockerel. About a week or so ago, we got our call- they were here! We got there, and the young lady had pre-boxed them for us, and let us know she had tried to give us a good variety of color- which was great. I couldn't resist grabbing one more pullet. Our grand total(that were hatched the night before) came out to 6 pullets and the cockerel. They all came from Belt Hatchery in Fresno(I love local). Here is a pic of the kids(they have started sprouting tails)...
Well, the saga continues. Last weekend I stopped by my friend Sandra's house, and we hung out. She had informed me that she was tired of doing the chicken thing, and she had a very broody hen sitting on an entire clutch of eggs, and she had al;ready successfully raised three previous clutches- so of course, I snagged her and the eggs. So this morning we woke up and found that 3 had hatched so far! They are so tiny! Here is a pick...they sort of look like a fuzzy black blob, but there really are 3 chicks in there! lol ...
Well, I had taken 2 of the broody's eggs and put them under Blue the Roo, and one of them(the eggs) was moving on its own...so we're checking regularly, and hopefully by tomorrow the rest will have arrived!
I want to say I love this site...I was SO totally prepared this because of all the advice and shared situations that are here. Thanks, BYC- even my husband is getting into it!
