So went out to clean the coop tonight and out of my surprise there was a little egg in there, not in the nesting box but it was there. So I took it out and now it's inside on my counter, what should I do next? I didn't expect eggs for a few more weeks so I didn't research what to do when you start getting eggs. Do I wash it do I keep it warm, I don't know if it today or yesterday, is it ok if it had been in the coop for awhile, the egg was warm when I took it out.

Eat it! Thats what you do next. lol You can wash it but you don't have to. you can leave it on your counter or put it in the refrigerator. It is fine even if it was laid yesterday.

Like people, some mature faster than others.

Enjoy your egg, whatever you decide to do with it.

I've kept a few first eggs for display, they cost me hundreds each afterall...

Yippee! It's always so exciting when that happens. You look at that first egg like it's a blooming miracle. "Really? I actually got an egg? wow!" As for washing them, chickens deposit a covering called "bloom" that seals the egg and protects it from contamination. I don't wash mine unless they're especially dirty, and only then just before using. I want to keep the bloom on them if possible. Refrigeration will keep them longer, but FRESH eggs will last quite a while without it, and they typically don't last long before they're eaten, anyway.

Enjoy!

Put it in some sort of holder...an egg carton perhaps and store it in the fridge until you want to eat it. Unless it is dirty, don't clean it, leave it be.

If it's dirty, wipe it with a dry cloth. If you must wash it, do it with tepid water so as not to force bacteria through the shell and into the interior of the egg.

We got our first egg today also! We're so excited!
I heard that you shouldn't eat the eggs for 2 weeks if they had been on medicated starter feed. Anyone else hear that?
