Omg!! Such Stupid People One Meets!!

I signed up for this site to get as much information as I can. Some of the things that are said on here are horrible. I believe I am being smart about my future chickens. I have not bought any yet as I want to make sure that I know everything I possibly can, and have everything I possibly need. I know there are some things you can only learn by doing. The point is that I thought this would be a good place to come to get advice and some of my questions answered. After reading some of these post's it makes me very nervous, I don't want people to believe that I am too "stupid" or that I am not going to be able to care for my chickens properly. I do agree that some people do make on the fly decisions and that is not right. However please don't lump all of us into that same category. Please try to be considerate and helpful. You never know you could give me some really good advice that I may never have thought too ask about. I am hear to learn, so I can give my future flock the best possible life I can.

Just a quick suggestion for Minniechickmama - during the fair when someone wants to buy a chick and you are worried about the outcome - would it be possible to let them buy the chick, but tell them you will hold it for them until they are ready to go home? You know, just to keep it safe for them.

Maybe mark it somehow as being sold - a twist tie around the leg or dab of nailpolish on a toe or something. That way if they change their minds about taking it, they will probably just leave without it. Children will probably forget about it in less than 10 minutes when they are at the fair anyway. Just make sure to give them a time limit when they need to come back and get it. "If not back by 5:00, I will need to sell it to someone else so it can have a good home ..."

I don't have any experience with chicks, so I don't know if you can mark them somehow, but just an idea.

I
admire those who learn from their mistakes, its those who repeat the same mistakes over and over and chose to stay in ignorent bliss whom I dislike.

Oh, that's awful. West Nile Virus has decimated BlueJays in our area. It used to be that springtime meant the ruckus of Jays everywhere, and I always raised three or four fall-out-of-nesters every year. Now hearing or seeing a BlueJay is a singular occurence. We have two pairs nesting on our place and I'd deliver an a** Kickin' to anyone that bothered those nests!

I had this same experience at my TSC last week. I purchased 12 chicks myself. A woman with 3 kids all between the ages of maybe 6 and 12. They weren't from the U.S. and had NEVER seen a chicken. They had to read the sign to see what it was. However, the mother decided to buy 6 chicks. She let her kids man handle every chick in the 2 tanks for probably 20 minutes. At this point I was irritated already.. i started getting nosy--asking about their chicken knowledge. Nothing!!! So when one of the kids put his chick down and started eating some chips I told the mom he needed to use the hand sanitizer first or he could get sick. She looked at me like I was insane!!! So I slowly tried putting my two cents in about what she needed to take care of them. She said--"ummm, I think I can handle a little chick". But, I kept on. HOping I'd irritate her enough she would just walk away. Nope, she still bought six chicks and a rabbit. GRRRRRRRRRRRR. So when she left the guy that was trying to help her just looked at me funny when I told him I wish they could refuse to sell to people like that and he agreed. So sad knowing those chicks probably won't make it long. The kids were rough with them and she didn't mind. I tried convincing her to buy the $20 kit so at least she'd have some stuff--nope! So--I guess there's not much we can do with ignorant people just happy to be ignorant. At least you tried.
