I'm raising my kids bilingual and it's an uphill battle to maintain a second language when they are immersed in English everywhere. But I have a curious observation from my sample size of 2. When I was pregnant with my first, I only spoke English. Then I started speaking my other language to her after she was born. So when I was pregnant with my second, he would hear me speak both languages (one to his sister and the other to everybody else). To this day, he has a much stronger affinity for this second language than his sister does, is more likely to speak it without prompting, and is better at it than she was at this age (better at it than English even). It's hard to say if that's because he heard me speak it while I was pregnant, or because once born, he had 2 people to hear it from and speak it with, as opposed to her only having me at the beginning. But it is interesting.

It is pretty interesting! I was raised bilingual too, and my parents had a rule we could only speak Spanish at home. I hated it though, and spoke English anyway as often as I could. XD

That's one way to turn kids away from a language They have to want to do it, otherwise it won't work. Forcing them will only make them rebel on principle, especially after a certain age. I've been working hard on getting my kids to enjoy it and to want to do it on their own, and they do. They are fluent in both and only ever speak the second language with me, by their own choice. They are still young though, at 5 and 3, so we'll see what happens later... but so far, so good!

May I ask where you get your affinity for Romanian from? Romania and Bulgaria are neighbors, so that certainly peaked my interest

I love that song!!!!

Romanian is not a Slavic language though. It's a Romance language (derived from Latin) like Spanish, French and Italian are. Bulgarian doesn't just have a heavy Slavic influence, it IS a full-fledged Slavic language, one of the main branches along with Russian.
