Romanian is not a Slavic language though. It's a Romance language (derived from Latin) like Spanish, French and Italian are. Bulgarian doesn't just have a heavy Slavic influence, it IS a full-fledged Slavic language, one of the main branches along with Russian.

I guess I didn't express my thought properly, LOL! I knew Romanian is a Romance language, although if I remember correctly, Latin developed from the language spoken in the Dacian Empire from where the first Romans came, which would have been an early form of Romanian which is why Romanian has grammatical features found in Latin but not in other Romance languages i.e. noun declensions? I could be wrong though.

I know Romanian isn't a Slavic language per se but had heavy Slavic influence and even used to use the Cyrillic alphabet? Unless I'm missing something lol. It's been years. I know Romanian grammar is at least somewhat close to Russian. Can you provide any inside info? Lol

Since we're on the subject, I've always loved learning different languages but I never became fluent in anything but English. I even took 3 years of Spanish and the local Mexican restaurant that we frequent they love giving me a hard time, it's good for me, lol...My daughter on the other hand has surpassed all of us in her language skills and I'm homeschooling her, so here I am pouring over two languages on Rosetta Stone. LOL!!! My daughter learned Latin in school before we started to homeschool her. They said it makes learning other Latin based languages easier, they weren't kidding! She's learning German right now which I'm dabbling with and my Husband has taken the lead with German and I've gravitated toward Japanese. My kid is not a savant, I think she just enjoys being able to say things to us that we don't understand so much that she's really taking to it. Whatever works right!

Languages are so much fun! They open up a whole new world. Good for you all that you're challenging yourselves with more languages. And yes, learning one, even if not the "root" language, does make other related languages much easier to pick up! I'm fluent in Bulgarian and English (Bulgarian is my native language but English is my dominant language); I used to speak Spanish at a comfortable, conversational level and be able to read books and watch movies in it, but it's been over a decade since I've practiced it, so it's very rusty. Back then I would find Italian and Portuguese suddenly easy to sort of make out, because of their overlap with Spanish. I used to be at a similar level with Russian, too (very easy to pick up because it's similar to Bulgarian). And I took 4 years of German in high school and was at an okay level, but that was a million years ago and now I don't remember much. I just really love languages. It takes an incredible amount of work to keep them alive and active though, otherwise you start to lose them quickly. I didn't believe it was possible, but I almost forgot my own native language at one point because I didn't have enough people to speak it with and keep it up! Thanks to the kids, I have now revived it and am okay again, but it's probably somewhere at a 7th grade level, since that's when English took over.

Depends on your definition of "learn" and what your goals are If you just want to understand the lyrics of songs, or to chat with people online (with the online dictionary open), that's one thing, and it's pretty doable. If you want to hold a conversation with a native face-to-face, or visit the country, though, that's a whole different thing... Also doable, but with a lot of work and resources. Find yourself somebody native to talk to, that's the best resource. My Spanish skyrocketed while I was dating a Mexican guy back in the day

I don't know any native Elves, unfortunately. They all sailed to the Undying Lands at the beginning of the Fourth Age, and mere peredhil like myself cannot sail the straight path to Valinor without an Elvish ship!

Oh, yeah, I guess that wasn't very clear. Yeah, there's some spillover from Bulgarian by virtue of sharing a border, but I wouldn't call it a heavy influence. I don't really understand anything when listening to it, just maybe an occasional word that sounds familiar. Romanian is indeed unique among the Romance languages.

Boobegg #1 needs to hurry up and hatch!! I am getting impatient!! Every time I get a notification that you have replied to this thread I think “oh maybe the egg has finally pipped!!” And then no. I can only imagine what you must be feeling...
