Bachelor

Flame staggered away from the border, crimson blood seeping from his wounds. A burning rage for Vanner built within him, growing, growing, until it was almost too much to bear. He reared, and uttered a scream of agony and fury. Then he wheeled, and barreled away.
……….
Vanner groaned in pain, his eye lids fluttering. Gypsy leaped to her feet. “Vanner, come’on now, open your eyes.” She whispered, her eyes swimming with tears. As if on cue, Vanner’s eyes snapped open. He smiled weakly when he saw Gypsy. “Guess he beat me, huh?” He grunted. “No, he’s gone Vanner.” Gypsy whispered. A shrill voice cut between them. “Yeah! And it’s all your fault grass-head! You should never become the next lead stallion! Heck, you’re not even a colt yet! You’re still a baby! A foal!” Twilight screamed. Vanner’s heart stung horribly at her words. A deep angry rumbling sounded close by him. He looked up to see Gypsy standing ridged, her teeth bared, and eyes flashing. “Don’t take it to heart Vanner.” She said gently. “She’s only a snobby, grass-headed skunk of a horse. Besides, she’s ‘blinded by love.’” She snorted, her nostrils flared. Vanner groaned, and laid his head down. He was encouraged by her words, but was also discouraged as well. “Thanks Gypsy.” He mumbled, and then fell into a peaceful sleep. Gypsy sank down beside him, listening ‘till his breathing slowed to a rhythmic pace.
……….
Flame screamed again, but his words were carried away by strong winds he had never felt before. He must be out of the valley; usually there were never any storms, and little to no wind. He lifted his head, flared his nostrils, and sucked in a deep breath. No recognizable scents. He was out of Meadowherd’s territory. He let out a long sigh, in contentment, and also nervousness. He had never been away from the herd. Not once. “Oh, why was Vanner so stupid!?” He snarled, and slammed his hooves against a very large tree. He looked closely at the gouges he had made in it; the tree was old, dead, and huge; almost three or four yards in diameter. Studying the tree closely, he jumped in surprise as a gruff, but smooth deep voice sounded directly behind him. “Hey little bachelor.” Flame jumped, and in the air, spun around to face the voice. A huge, stocky cremelo stallion stood in front of him, his pink eyes cunning. Flame instantly bared his teeth, and flattened his ears, backing into the large tree. “Who are you?!” He squeaked, his voice high in fright. The large stallion burst into a chortling laugh. “I’m Zanzibar.” He winked, as if his name had a legend behind it. “But the real question is, who are you?” His voice had turned hard, and threatening. “Flame!” He squeaked again, his brown eyes huge. Zanzibar’s body language changed suddenly, just like it had before. “Welcome young bachelor.” He grinned, his smile holding mischief. “T-thank you?” Flame cocked his head; why was he being welcomed? His heart skipped a beat as another huge stallion sauntered up to them. It was Raven. His green eyes glowed from his pitch black pelt. Flame stumbled away from him, but it was too late. Raven’s green eyes had locked onto him.

"Y- you!" Was all Flame could utter. His brown eyes were two times their normal size. Raven watched the colt calmly; "Me? What about me?" He frowned, then his ears fell back. "Hey, you're part of Meadowherd..... aren't you?" Flame's ears drooped. "Not anymore. Bullet drove me out." He lifted his chin, staring deffiantly at Raven. Raven shrugged, rolling his green eyes, and turned to Zanzibar. "Well? Shouldn't we get going?!" He snorted, dancing in place. Zanzibar smiled; "Well, Flame, would you like to join our group of bachelors? We're going to raid that herd over the ridge." He pointed his his muzzle. Flame suppressed a sigh of relief. They weren't raiding Meadowherd. Shrugging he replied; "Don't know. What's in it for me?" He spoke slowly, hoping to seem older. Zanzibar burst into his chortling laughter; "Well, if ya' do help out, I'm sure there'll be a lovely filly in the bunch." He winked. Raven rolled his eyes, but Flame's eyes lit up. "Count-!" He squeaked, pausing, he started again. "Count me in!" He nickered, forcing his voice lower than normal. Zanzibar laughed. "Alright, here's the plan:" He leaned in closer to Flame like he was about to share top-secret information. "Raven here, will distract the leader, and give 'im what for. I'm goin' for the lead mare, and if she won't budge, I'm after the other mares. You," He curled his lip in a smile. "Will pick out any filly that suits your fancy." He rocked back on his heels, looking quite smug. Flame frowned; "Um, how do I get a filly to come with me?" Zanzibar uttered an exasperated huff. "Simple! All ya' do is flirt a 'bit, then tell 'er she can go with ya if she wants to. If ya' put on a good show, they'll do anything to go with ya'." A smile played at the corner of Flame's lips. "Gotcha'." He replied. "Okaaay Zanzibar. He's got it. Can we get going??" Raven snorted, pawing the ground. Flame watched as each hoof dragged through the dirt, his muscles rolling beneath his sleek black pelt. Zanzibar turned a fiery glare to the young stallion. "Hold yer' horses Raven." He snarled, turning to Flame. "Ready?" Flame nodded. "You bet." Without responding, Zanzibar wheeled, then sprinted towards the ridge. Flame gathered his long legs, and bolted after them. As he ran, he thought about, well, everything. He had only been away from is herd for a few hours, and now look what he was doing! He was raiding a herd! He was a bachelor! A broad smile spread over his face.
