I had such high hopes when I got two chicks for my broody hen. Always fun to add to the flock. But then one baby somehow didn't make it back into the pen one day and she vanished. Ugh. And now, this:

My heart sunk when my neighbor said he ended up with roosters, so I am holding my breath over this chick. If anyone wants to check out the post and weigh in with opinions, I'd appreciate it.

Also - what do you do with a bird if it turns out to be a rooster? I just don't know if I could do what I would have to do...

Your chick has vulture hocks. That's what they call those downward growing feathers that you weren't sure about.

As you know, it's too soon to be sure but the more time passes with little to no comb change, the more likely it is to be a pullet.

@TheKindaFarmGal I wondered about Ameraucana/EE - the feed store people list them as Ameraucanas and I am surprised they would do so if they are getting EE's. I noticed she has green legs so thought maybe she was, indeed an Ameraucana. Maybe I have it backwards about the leg color?

@debid thank you for this info - I have never heard of vulture hocks. I don't remember seeing them with my other EE's so this is new to me.

Feed stores do that all the time. It's common to mislabel EEs as Ameraucanas, Araucanas, Americanas, etc. True Ameraucanas and Araucanas are rare, and you will never find them at feed stores.
