On the hunt for a peachick, need advice.

Sometimes it is hard to get @casportpony
attention!  Kathy has some really nice tame chicks and we are sure that she can  fix you up.

Hey now, lol...

I still have a few young boys (12-14 weeks) that I'm about to put outside. None are tame like you want, but they aren't wild either. Google Gilroy, CA and see if that's a doable drive. I do have a 15 month old that's pretty tame, but not lap dog tame... He's one that was caught by a coyote that had to live inside for several weeks until his wounds healed.

Pea are very much like guineas IMO you want them lap dog tame you have to handle them daily , don't mean they will not pester you when you are doing something if you don't

all my babies that are still here from this year and lastyears hatch are total pest and i have been handling some pretty much daily sense they hatched out this year and they still protest when i go to pick them up but they do not run off when i put them down nor do they run off when i reach down to pick them up again, they just like to fuss i guess, they fly up on my lap and sometimes they use my head as a launch pad to get to the carport to eat the cats food

Wow, I really appreciate all the help and advice. Gilroy is 300 miles one way from my house...not exactly next door. We might want to make the trip if I don't find anything around here in the next few weeks. I am fishing around Southern California but for some reason I can't find anything except for one professional breeder in Norco, who has only wild birds or straight run eggs. I don't know about that, never hatched an egg before!!

If you start handling and playing around with a "not lap dog tame" young un, is there any possibility that he will end up getting tamer? My boyfriend/significant other/partner really wants one that he can give head scratches to and will sit in his lap. I want to make him happy because he misses our dearly departed bird so much. It's tough to see a grown man cry. I feel the same way, and I do think the best cure for when you lose a pet is to get a new one.

I am thinking maybe I should wait until the next season starts and see if somebody will sell me a day old chick.

You know... given that level of attachment, you might just try springing for a not too expensive 'bator and see what you can hatch. It's not quite as easy as hatching chicken eggs, but it's reasonably doable, and lots of folks here to give you advice and answers... I have an inexpensive Hovabator Genesis (available for about $150) that I've been fairly happy with, and a cheaper Little Giant that I upgraded with a fan kit, but that doesn't work as well... You wouldn't want to do lots and lots of hatching with these, but the Genesis works okay for the level of hatching that I do.

It's very, very cool to watch the eggs develop and hatch... And yes, it's pretty sad when they don't quite make it, for whatever reason. But as Zaz said recently, maybe on another thread, in terms of relating to your birds, everything changes -- it's really special when you hatch your own.

Then you can be a pea-brain like the rest of us

Although driving to Gilroy is also a good option

In my own experience only, if you spend a lot of time with the bird, it will become tame even if it is older when you get them. I got my boy Peggy when he was about 9 months old, and now he's not happy without his daily petting. He was a special case though, long story, but he had to have some special care for a while.

We have yearlings and 2-3 year olds here who will eat out of your hand, which I think is a good first step towards taming (what do you think, those with more experience?).
In case you'd like a shorter drive...

...send me a PM!

Peggy, the Perfect Bird...

Hoppy Sneezy and Bro, the pesky yearlings...

*eta Just to be clear, however, there is NO WAY Peggy would sit in my lap!

Do you have any chickens that go broody? i used them exclusively this year and my hatch rate was outstanding.

If you want a lap pea, waiting 'til next year is probably what you should do.
