I count by groups too:

first I count the 5 tall blacks.

Then there's some sneaky math for the whites that aren't really white but some have white in them and some sorta came together: 4 (tall) + 1 (blue) + 3 (small) - this does not equal 7 by the way... it equals 4 + 1 + 3

Then comes crazy because I have to do real math for the 12 bantams, not 13, not 11, not for goodness sake 10, but 12. It's a bit more than my poor brain can handle especially since dusk in a duck house with small black ducks hiding behind the 5 + 4 + 1 + 3 + running around = I give up

by groups

there are 3 white hens
2 red chickens (Roo and Queenie)
4 buff chicks
4 "black" chicks (black sexlinks)

Faster and easier to glance in the coop and see 3 white blobs and 2 dark blobs (the reds) than to try to go 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,....

I think of the adults as:
1 Patch roo
1 Sweetcheeks who thinks he's a banty
4 banties
2 spotties
3 fluffy butts
3 Chipmunks
2 stupid roos
4 of those pullets
1 Funnyhat

I don't know what I will do when the chicks move out of the brooder. I was messed up for WEEKS when we processed all the roos.

Usually by groups 'n coops...

The LF girls + roo
The Oddballs (mixture of little bantams)
The SCochins (Silkie-Cochin coop)
The Seramas
The P/S's (Polish/Serama trio)
The d'Anver Quad
& The Mille Fleur Cochins

I don't even want to know the grand total! Plus it is always a changing number...sell a few, hatch a few, buy a few, order a few...etc

Pumpkinpup and I kind of started the whole "Chicken Math" thing last year. We went to Florida for 4 Chickens came back with over 50 but by the time we got back we only had 5 according to CM.......

This is hilarious to see it still going on. Somewhere I posted Rules for Chicken Math last year.

I count by color/breed in each age group. I have 42 chickens at the moment, need to find homes for 7 roos and 10 hens so I should only have 25 by summer.

My totals are best guesstamits... I could never get them to sit still long enough to count them all. Especially the ducks since a lot of them look alike LOL! DH also does not ever want to hear how many I have!

Let me tell you about a FUNNY Count.

My DH and I moved our 7 week chicks from the bitty cage to their new coop. We scooped them out 5 - 7 at a time and put them in a rubbermade tub with a lid and transported them to the coop. Then returned to the bitty cage and repeated the process.

When we got done - I said - "Count them honey"

So he said there were 14. I said "Oh No - you must of counted wrong"

So, then I started counting - - by breed -

1, 2, 3 White leghorns
1, 2, 3, 4 Marans,
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 EEs.

" Oh no - we lost a chick" Did the kids sneak out and lose it? Did DH and I lose it? OH NO - where did the chick go?

So, I stand there for a minute feeling all sad about losing a chick. THEN I REALIZE the problem - - -
I counted the BROWN EE's. They were suppose to be all pullets. However, we got one black and white EE that turned out to be a ROO. I wasn't counting him, because he wasn't the right "COLOR".

We had all 15 chicks after all !

CHICK MATH IS HARD TO DO SOMETIMES ! ! If the little girls could just learn to say "present" when I take attendance life would be so o o o o good.
