Once again treating my roo's legs for ????

Did you ever find out what was wrong or did you manage to cure it? Looks like one of my roos is coming down with the same condition and I remembered reading this thread a while back. Thanks.

I ended up rehoming my roo. I found a local lady with a few hens that contacted me asking if I had any roosters. I showed Duke to her and told her about the foot/leg issues I'd had, and she fell in love with him, and was willing to take the chance that his legs may not ever heal. I told her what I'd learned thus far, and she sounded like she'd be treating him, but I haven't been in contact with her since she took him, which has probably been two months now.

Gritsar - I'd love for you to weigh in - I sent Kat some of the med I was told by a poultry person with tons of experience to try, but I don't know if Kat's started the regimen yet. I'll give her a shout & ask her to weigh in.

Wynette,
As I explained in PM I haven't had a chance to start the treatment regimen with Thor yet. I have two plastic spray bottles that I bought a few weeks back specifically for this sitting on the counter reminding me daily to get started.
Thor's legs are actually looking a bit better right now, without treatment. He has new feather growth.
Things have quieted down into a routine around here, so I'll plan to start the treatment tonight.

Thanks guys. What is the name of the treatment? Just wondering if I will be able to get it or something similar over here. Gritsar: If you would be kind enough to post back occasionally with your progress I would be grateful. I will be checking back with interest to see what results you get.

Thanks again.

I sure will. I'm going to start the treatment tonight. I have the bottles all ready. I generally handle Thor after they've gone to roost at night, since he's calmer then.
The treatment involves using hibiclens (a surgical cleanser) and virkon (Wynette was kind enough to send me some virkon tablets to try).
Okay, here are the instructions for the hibiclens/virkon treatment:

put the Hibiclens in a spray bottle - spray his (clean & dry) legs with the Hibiclens, let sit on him for 10 mins. and then rinse off/air dry.

Put a Virkon tab in a spray bottle & add 16 ozs. water. The solution is only good for 10 days. After he dries off from the Hibiclens spray/rinse, spray thoroughly with the Virkon and let air dry, and leave it on (no rinsing). Spray him a couple times a day for 3 days, then do the whole thing again.

After about 10 days, you "should" be seeing results!

The Virkon tabs are used by the commercial poultry industry to eliminate MANY diseased, and the spray can also be used to disinfect coops/roosts, so if you are getting near the 10-day mark and you still have unused spray, you can always use it for that to get it gone but not wasted.

(Hope you don't mind that I cut and pasted that Wynette.)

Hibiclens you can get over the counter at any pharmacy. Wynette will have to fill you in on sources for the virkon.
Good luck to you.

Just wondering if the Virkon worked. My roo has the same thing. Have tried permethrin, antibiotics, bag balm and neosporin.

Gosh, so odd - I'm glad this thread got revived because I have the issue yet AGAIN with a DIFFERENT rooster! Mine isn't as bad as vicegrips - vicegrip, your boy appears to actually be inflamed, yes? My guy has lost most all of his feathers but a few.

I never did the Hibiclens/Virkon treatment soon - gritty, did you ever do so?

Also - vicegrip - EXCELLET pics you took - I wonder if you have sent them in to doc Peter Brown? There is now a $25 fee for a consultation, however, the fee is waived if you have made (or make) a purchase in the last 30 days. I would be willing to split the fee with you, vicegrip, or anyone else who is having this problem if you have good pics of it - if you should decide to do so. PM me if you're interested in making arrangements to do so.

WOW! This looks very painful...poor boys. I have no clue what it is but I hope you all that have birds that are afflicted with this heal soon.
