but, has anyone used cherries as a natural remedy for gout?

In humans, cherries are a natural preventative/treatment. Just wondered if anyone had tried on chickens.....

I see this post ended a few months ago; however, these are the legs on my game rooster. He's very old, and over the last 6 months he's lost the feathers on his "drumsticks" and even on part of his chest. The skin is angry and red. At times he is disoriented, and often falls off his perch. I attributed much of this to old age; however, over the last few months I've tried: coconut oil/tea tree oil, A&D ointment, liquid bandage, and over the last 2 days drops on his neck for fleas in dogs. He will show improvement, then go down again. Eats, drinks fine. I put DE in the chickens' food (they all free range), and the coop is clean and I sprinkle DE everywhere. Help someone! And after reading previous posts, this one does NOT have feathery feet. His leg scales are not affected, just the meaty parts of his legs. Anyone????

When you say "very old" - how old is that exactly?

Have you treated him for internal parasites?

I think he's around 9? I have always given everyone DE in their food, and no one else has any symptoms of anything, very suspicious....What would you give him for internal parasites that the DE wouldn't take care of? Thanks for your response, by the way....I do love him.

9 is VERY old for a chicken, goodness! What a testament to your good care that he's still around at such a ripe old age!

I have been told by a few breeders who seem to be very "in the know" on all current medications/treatments/supplements, and the current theory behind DE being FED to birds is that it is harmful to the digestive tract. You probably already know that DE, upon magnification, has very sharp edges; the thought behind it used to be that these sharp edges cut into any parasite's body (i.e., worms) and would kill it. However, recent findings (I cannot quote research papers, as this is not something I personally researched - it was information gleaned from another breed board) seem to indicate that DE can damage a digestive tract in the same way that it kills parasites; by making tiny knicks along the soft tissue. This would eventually cause scar tissue to develop & build up along the intestinal walls. Again, I'm not an expert, and I don't know this to be true, beyond what I have read.

I do believe DE is effective in keeping a flock that is already free of parasites externally (mites, lice) clean, but it is definitely not a treatment for an infestation.

With a bird that old, I don't know how much I would try, personally. The normal "protocol" for treating worms, assuming he has them (but it doesn't seem like he would) would be Wazine first, followed by something stronger and more "across the board" in nature to eliminate any internal parasites. Again, though, I am just not sure that is a good course of action with a bird this old. And, my guess, by your postings, is that you're opposed to chemical use?

This is very odd an happening to my Black Cochin rooster. It seems to come and go but this time it's worse! I have treated for worms, lice and mites. I just put some EVOO all over his leg and feet. I don't know what else to do!
Any thoughts or suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Are both feet the same? I see he has feathered feet like my Brahma. Any way you can clip them so they'll heal w/o all the fru-fru in the way? I had a similar mystery condition w/ my rooster, and I too tried vegetable oil, coconut oil, tea tree oil, neosporin, you name it and I tried it...painted it on w/ a paintbrush each time. I had the best success with coconut oil on the legs/feet, and a drop of Revolution on the neck. That's pretty drastic, though. Is there not a vet nearby that you can send the photo to?

Yes both of his feet / legs look the same. I have been soaking his legs for the last 5 nights in warm water and Epsom salt. Then I paint on a ton of either bag balm or coconut oil. There doesn't seem to be any change at all. They are still very red and angry looking. I honestly don't know what else to do. I just ordered some NuStock and will try that when it gets here.
