One ANGRY Broody

Mocha, the 7-month Mottled Java who bit me the other day, is in the broody breaker for the sake of her health. I'll let her hatch a batch after she's had time to reach her full growth.

The broody breaker is a permanent fixture in my run now, thanks to my mottled Java Shelley. She's been in there twice already this spring! I'm lucky though, she puffs up and acts tough, but has never pecked or bitten me. Letting her sit is not a viable option for me, sadly.

It took her almost two weeks to really make up her mind to sitting tightly, but she looks promising as a potential mother once she's older.

My Maleficent went broody at a similar age. Her broody breaker was a little smaller.

I might be getting my broody breaker out again already! Widget took 5 days to break, and that was 5 days ago. She was in the nest last night, and I took her out. She went right back in this morning. I'm leaving her alone for a few hours on the possible chance that she just has to lay an egg. But if she's still there when I get back from the store, I'm getting the crate out.

I really, really wish I could let her raise 3 pullet chicks. If we weren't going to Maine in July, I would. If she becomes a "serial broody" I might do it when we get back.

With the original 4 we didn't have a broody to deal with. I hope I get lucky with the new 7. LOL...
