Sounds like you are doing really well. Chick will need to be with you some of the time, but, if she has adopted her 'safe place' in the brooder that's a big step. Keep going. Chick will be fine. It's already doing much better today actually. It's happy being out with me, but I've had it in the brooder since I went out to try to get the mom back in the run and it's coping pretty well. I put a stuffy in there like people suggested. It's halfway wedged under the brooder plate so she can snuggle with it at night if she wants, but I'm thinking the whole thing must be warmed up from that, cause she's sitting on top of the part of it that's sticking out.
Brilliant! So happy for you!yay!!! Good job!
When I get baby chicks from the store I a buy a feather duster and hang it or prop it so the baby chick can hide under it. I also had a couple turkey chicks one year and one died. I used a little stuffed animal in the corner. The turkey slept with it every nightGuys, it has been a bad day. I went out yesterday to do some repairs and I was shocked to find that one of my hens hatched a lone egg. There was a little tiny baby chick following her around outside. Now, it's cold where I live, and the rainy season is starting in earnest (no weather for a baby to be outdoors in), plus there's no food that a baby could reach/eat out there, or water, plus I was worried about the baby getting trampled or hurt by the other chickens, so I decided to bring momma and baby indoors to separate them and let the chick get bigger/hardier before returning them to the flock outside.
Well, I caught baby and momma, but before I could walk into my house, momma wriggled free and BOLTED. She is gone. She ran clean out of my yard, into my neighbor's yard, and probably beyond. There is no sign of her. So now I have a lone chick in my room, crying and crying. I have no other chicks I can put in with it, and I tried bringing in another of my (only broody at inopportune times) hens, but even though the baby was willing to sit under her/hide in her feathers, she's not broody or interested in being a momma, and just pecks the poor little thing. I put her back outside again.
I have the baby in a box with a brooder plate and some wet mash. It just cries and cries.
What can I even do at this point? I'm beside myself.I'm praying that when it gets to be bedtime that the mom will come back, but I'm not holding my breath. She ran so far. I wouldn't be shocked if she's lost and can't find her way back.
How can I keep this poor baby alive at this point? I feel like it's gonna die from stress just being alone. Please help me. T-T
I feel so defeated. I had the mom in my hands and she just slipped through and now the baby is probably going to die. I feel so terrible.I'm a failure as a chicken parent.
I had the same thing this year times 2!! One broody Barred rock who without my knowledge stole one of my silkies eggs I had removed all the eggs from her and have no idea how she managed to get this one but she did and hatched a lone little silkie mix! Its cute as can be but I too worry as we have now moved into colder wet weather but my exp. has been that Momma raised chicks are very hardy and actually do really well. This little chick is thriving. My chickens are free range during the day but I have separated momma and baby into my nursery pen that has a small coop. Next my silkie decided to go broody for what seems like the 100th time this year and managed to hatch two little fuzz balls I had to get creative and get her into a pen with her children. I am amazed at how well momma raised chicks do in spite of the weather. If momma comes back she will likely want her chick I am crossing my fingers for you! If not the chick will be ok I am sure someone has mentioned this but sometimes putting a mirror in your brooder as well as a stuffed animal it can cuddle up to helps. there is a puppy on amazon that has a little heat pack in it its meant to help puppies but I bet it would work for a baby chick as well! Hang in there my friend you are doing great!! ***Had to edit as I had not seen the all the other posts I'm late to the threads as usual glad to hear things are going well!Guys, it has been a bad day. I am so happy to hear this!!!!I GOT HER!
I went outside to get the black stool and she was on the right side of the run.
I used the string to pull the door open a little, then I swung really wide on the right and got her to come around to the front of the run. I waited for her to notice that the door was open, and as soon as she wandered inside I shut the door behind her.
She was totally soaked, muddy and freezing, so I brought her in, got her cleaned up and blew her dry. She was very hungry, so I gave her some scrambled egg, feed and water. She's now in the brooder with her baby. Baby is very happy to see her! Hiding in her feathers and eating with her and everything. She hasn't acknowledged the baby super much yet, but she attacks my hand when I come near now, so I think that's a good sign. I think she'll need the rest of the day to recover, but a very happy ending overall.
Now back to my original plumbing problem.![]()
Dear, just cuddle it. Wrap it on a soft cloth. Act as a hen, pick on the floor w your finger on some food ( and make "cock" noise) In a few days the bb will believe that U r mommy.
