One Breed/Color Only Flock Owners!!!!

Not me...I'm in more of a "SOMEBODY STOP ME" mode!!!

Since this is my first year with chickens, I got several breeds. This way I can see what type I like the most. But I would like to eventually narrow that down to one breed.

Of course, while breed maintenance is a beautiful thing, there's nothing wrong with starting with several breeds and then mixing them to make a new breed. If no one had ever done this we wouldn't have Chantecleres, Faverolles, Sussex, or any number of other breeds today...

I bought 5 feed store chickens, probably rir production, who knows, then I was given many of a new breed I've named appalachian mountain chickens, they are all different colors, and feather patterns, although black is predominent(with beetle green and blue sheen) It might be nice to have a flock of identical chickens, but these are so well suited to the enviroment I think I'll stick with it, besides it's interesting to see what color combo will be next, and when in Rome..

I don't have them yet, and 4 birds might not be a flock, but I'm only going to have Buff Orpington's. I only want 4 hens, and I love the look of the Orps. I chose them for their egg laying and beautiful colouring.

Well I ordered 45 ISA Browns... all one breed:

But I couldn't stand the thought of not having some variety Soooo i have a second flock that will merge later that includes 2 barred rocks, 10 R1R, 9 Marans, a pair of wellsummers and few easter eggers I hatched from green eggs:

Right now we have 45 chickens, 8 or 9 differant breeds, and its an amazing looking flock. But once my black tailed japs are old enough to breed they are going to get to be their own flock seperate from the others. I think that will be really pretty.

Right now I have a mixed flock: 4 EEs, 2 Dominiques, 2 Americaunas, 2 gorgeous barnyard mixes, and 4 bantams (D'Uccles). I am currently trying to decide what I want for my second flock because I also want a purebred flock to manage for meaties and eggs. Because I want to maintain it, I'm hoping to find a breed that works for these on the conservation watch/threatened lists.
